Chapter 21

“So, what’s your name?” I asked the young boy as he leaned against the cave walls, an apple in his hand and a leaf-plate filled with fish. He looked away, still staring at the cave floor.

“It’s been the 15th time we’ve asked him that question,” Red muttered. “Just let him be,” Aqua said as she ever so slowly and delicately placed a piece of fish in her mouth.

“Well, since we’ve finished dinner,” Fara said, getting up and brushed herself off, “I’ll take night shift,”

“Nah, I’ll do it,” I cut her off, getting up on my own, “You’ve helped out too much today and the only thing that I ever did was sit around here and carve shit,”

“Yeah, but that ‘shit’ is mighty helpful,” she argued, “plus, you finished the arrows and everything else,”

“I said I’ll take the night watch and that’s that,” I poked my tongue out at her

“Just drop it, Fara,” Sakura faced Fara who was crossing her arms over her chest, trying to come at me with a smart assed comment. Sakura then beamed, “I think I’m in love,” she waved her bow around singing, “BEST! WEAPON! EVER!!”

I glanced at the boy, still looking at the floor, his hands playing with the apple. He hasn’t said a single word since we’ve taken him in. Either he was shy or was just plain rude. I sighed before picking up my bow and a few arrows and stalked towards the entrance of the cave.

….

I sat on a rock just outside of the cave, mouthing the lyrics to a few songs before I felt a presence behind me. I turned around to see the copper haired boy standing, his hands stuffed in his pockets as his bluish-green eyes sparkled in the night sky.

His lips moved.  His voice was soft and sounded sweet but tough at the same time. It practically screamed, ‘come at me, bro,’ which gave off an impression that he was bad assed. Though he only looked about 8…9? There was something about him that was just… off. He didn’t seem like an 8 year old. Sure, he looked like it but something was nudging me, telling me that there’s something so much more to him than his appearance.

I just suddenly realized that he said something but didn’t catch it.

“Sorry?” I asked, causing him to tilt his head.

“Felix,” he repeated, staring at me squarely in the eye.

Felix? What’s that? “Name’s Felix,” he said louder this time, taking a seat next to me on the rock. Ohhhhhhh

“Nice to meet you Felix. I’m Skylar but you can call me Skye,” I murmured, smiling at him, something he didn’t return. Instead, he looked away, his eyes locking into the distance.

 “Why’d you help me?”

His question took me by surprise and I shuffled in my rock-hard seat, “well umm… maybe it’s cause it seemed like you needed help… and helping people is what we just do,” I shrugged at the last part, still eying him from the corner of my eye.

“I didn’t need help,” He said, looking away from me. I scoffed inwardly, “you were bleeding from your thigh, Felix,” I said, looking at him properly this time.

“It’s just my thigh,” he argued but tugged at his bandage, showing that it burned a little. I decided to change the subject, “so, why where you alone in the forest?”

He stayed silent, still staring into the distance

“Okay, jeez, I get it. Not a comfortable subject,” I muttered, sighing before looking up at the sky.
