*Mai's POV*

Mai is the Chinese word for ocean. I've always liked this name, so I'm sorry if the name is a bit confusing for you. It's pronounced like the word "my".

but anyways...

_____

I sit down at Gate E3, waiting to board my plane to Boston.

I was going back home after a long week with my family. I love them all to death but a week with them was torture.

A lady speaks through an intercom and tells us, "Flight 3450 to Boston will now begin boarding. Please line up in an orderly fashion and find your seat on the plane. Thank you for choosing our airline today."

I look at my ticket and scramble to my position in the line. As I walk, my eyes search the room anxiously until they land on a boy looking straight at me.

I continue walking, but my eyes stay glued to him, and time slows down.

His hazel eyes were hard to look away from as he stared at me somewhat studiously. His shaggy blonde hair covered his forehead but didn't take the light away from his eyes.

Why was he staring at me? It wasn't like I looked cute or anything, since I was wearing shorts and an old tee shirt from church camp.

But he still somehow found me interesting enough to stare at.

The lady's voice booming through the intercom again breaks our eye contact and I finally find my place in line. As I shuffle forward every time a person boarded, I couldn't get the image of the hazel eyes out of my mind.

_____

I find my seat which wasn't horrible. I sat by a silent man with earphones who lightly hummed to his music.

I recognized the song - Don't Worry, Be Happy. I remember dancing to that song with my family when I was little, so his music and/or humming didn't bother me in the slightest.

I didn't notice hazel boy boarding, but I didn't really want to. His intense look scared me.

The plane takes off and I go straight to my music as we fly into the air. The buildings of Virginia were getting tinier and tinier as we flew higher and higher.

Once a woman's voice in an intercom tells us that we are at 10,000 ft. and that everyone could put down their trays and order drinks, I decided to take a very needed nap.

I pull my backpack up to my seat and use it as a pillow to help me sleep through most of the flight.

_____

I wake up to turbulence. Heavy turbulence. The whole plane was shaking so much that people's drinks spilled and luggage tumbled out from above us.

I glance at the man beside me, who looked panicked and had a death grip on both of his arm rests.

"What's going on?" I ask the man over the loud noise of people panicking.

"The captain said that we're passing through a thunder storm" he replies, and then gives me a look saying he clearly didn't want to talk to me any further.
