~Jack Frost~
It had been three days since I left. In the end, I supposed you think about the beginning. Because no matter how much I thought about my one hundred years alone, three days without a trace of Elsa in my life was worse. They were full of emptiness, loneliness..and guilt.
So on the sunset of the third day, I returned. Arendelle was like it was–the same way I had left it. Happy commoners strolling cobblestone streets, the palace still intact.
Except for one thing.
I found myself back at the pond, hunched over on the tree branch that Punzie attempted to climb only mere days before. It had been quiet. At first, I thought it was a usual, peaceful quiet. Until I noticed it was just dead silence.
"Jack!" My head twisted to see Rapunzel and Eugene running towards me. I returned to the ground as they both embraced me, tighter than usual. "Oh Jack," Tears fell from Punzie's heart-shaped cheeks and onto my iced clothes, her voice vastly devastated. I glanced up at Eugene, who surprisingly was shaken up too. "Frost," He said, his voice quivering, "you're an idiot."
I opened my mouth to ask why, when sobs erupted from Punzie. "Elsa! Elsa's been gone for three days! And the forest has been growing and Anna's overwhelmed and–"
"Elsa's gone?" I focused on her words and held onto her shoulders. "Yes," She sniffed, "and we can't find her. Not without going into those woods, and..and.." Rapunzel's crying couldn't be stopped now. My attention snapped back to the neighboring woods. I was flying too high on the way here, and was way too occupied with my own thoughts to notice a difference.
"I'll be back," I said, and flew off. The last thing I saw was Eugene holding Rapunzel in his arms, his eyes full of guilt and pity as he watched me from the ground.
~*~
Rapunzel wasn't kidding. The once small, harmless forest was now another version of those vines the famous immortal Maleficent had caused once. Trees towered above me, covered in poisonous greenery and thorn-infested vines. And the stench. It was like a bog, sending prickles up my spine.
I treaded carefully through the overgrowth, my crooked staff held out in front of me as I surveyed the the green mess of branches above. It was so thick barely any light escaped the nature-made ceiling.
Finally the woods parted in a clearing. The branches of close by trees still roofed the open space, with wisps of grass crinkling softly beneath my feet. The prickling on my back still hadn't stopped–which meant I was being watched.
I stopped in the middle of the clearing and explored the vast area with my eyes. It was huge–and the forest now was bigger than all of Arendelle, maybe even expanded to the foot of the mountains.
Then, I heard twigs breaking behind me. I swiftly turned, staff pointed at my new enemy–
It was Elsa.
She was lying on the ground, her once beautiful dress covered in dirt and leaves. Vines lingered on her face, tracing her veins that were now visible with her lifeless skin.
She wasn't breathing.
My legs refused to carry my weight anymore, and I fell to the ground, crouched over her lifeless corpse. She was dead. She had to be. But she can't! It can't end this way! I love her!
"Please," I croaked, cupping her beautiful face in my hands, hoping her eyelids would flutter open, and she could see me. I would help her return to Arendelle, where we would figure out this mess together, and stay together for the rest of time.
But it wouldn't happen.
Because she was mortal, and I was immortal, and there was no way to cross the line.
Not with humans.
