~Elsa~
It did not take long to spot the clearing from last time. I dropped down, and Mother Nature immediately formed from the soil yards away.
"Jeez, Elsie. You say one thing and do another! That lovesick dolt Frost will not last long here–"
Within two seconds, I had closed the distance between us and held a solid knife made of frost under her chin. "Neither will you if you keep talking," I retorted through gritted teeth.
"Hmph," Her hand covered mine and with a flick of her fingers, my knife flew out of my hands and landed useless on the ground. "I've been around for a long time, Ms. Elsa. Ivan the Terrible was my husband for a time, and then he tried to kill me and himself. If I wasn't honored to be the wife of a famous russian figure, I would be deeply offended."
"And I guess Russia would pay that price too?" My empty palm now tightened into a fist. "Yes," She whispered, and her grip on my wrist constricted, "until there wasn't one left standing."
"You're a monster," I fought against her grip, now eager for the old days of being alone, even if it meant just the company of vampires. I would take it. I would take an eternity with them instead of finishing this game with her.
"But that is not what this war is about, is it Ms. Elsa?" The sharp nails of her fingertips cut into my skin. "This is about your humanity. But I'm afraid I can't do it on my own. So I had to call on some help," Roots and foliage behind me crackled, and I turned my back for the first time on Mother Nature and saw something worse than her.
Mavis' body was lifeless, held up by strong but tender vines. On the right side of her neck, pincers of one of the treacherous snakes pierced her once flawless skin and a blue liquid leaked from the small wounds. I put my hands over my mouth, fearing for the one girl I cared about since Anna was gone and looked back at Mother Nature.
"What did you do to her?" My voice was raw, and my body trembled as she smiled. "Nothing much. My snakes got control of her, but I did really need it. I can control all life, even beyond the grave," Her eyes glimmered with dark, foul sins. "But the venom of the overgrown lizards is very dangerous, in fact you saw it with that pet dragon of yours. It brings out the beast in everyone. The worst thing is, Ms. Elsa, is that now you are the prey."
All of the air left my lungs, leaving me empty and speechless. I did this to Mavis. I thought this was a war based on me going insane. I was wrong. This was about quenching the human inside me and turning me into a monster like Mother Nature herself.
The vines retreated back into the earth, leaving Mavis on the ground. Her eyes were closed, as if she were peacefully sleeping. "Well, I'd love to enjoy and watch this play out, but I'm afraid I must be going. The sun will be rising soon," Mother Nature waved mockingly, and with the small snap of twigs, was gone.
I breathed in, expecting relief from her absence. Instead, I found myself wanting to go with her. The knots collecting on my back were full of tension, and I knew that I was not accompanied by solitude.
I walked over to Mavis and leaned over her unmoving body, wondering what to do. I can't heal her, that's not my thing. Rapunzel and M.K. are who knows where and Jack..well at least Jack has Puss. They'll keep each other safe.
I left my hand elevated over Mavis' shoulder when her alluring blue eyes snapped open. Her pupils were large, taking in the sight of the deep forest until slowly shrinking. Her body shuddered as she took in one, miniscule breath. I backed away as she sat up, her posture stiff as if she were a puppet being controlled by strings. She doesn't look like herself. I've never seen vampires like this, only once....
