Brief Summary: It was Aurora and Toby's first day of school. Toby was extremely ecstatic about it. Aurora was not into the whole idea of having Toby following her but she sort of adjusted. Toby meets Aurora's friends at lunch and Julie asks Aurora if she likes Toby. She is unsure how to answer and Julie decides that she'll ask Toby out. After lunch, Aurora and Toby have German together and then they part ways and finish their day. At the end of the school day Toby comes running back to Aurora's locker and tells her that Julie asked him out. He asks what to do and Aurora offers some advice. They both walk out of the school together unbeknownst that someone is watching them. Welcome to yet another continuation of 'My Next Door Neighbor is WHO?!'
Chapter 5:
"I knew that she liked him! Why else would she like his company and have him sit at lunch with us? She planned this out like a little game. I can't believe it. We've been friends since 6th grade and now she's backstabbing me. Well, I'll give her a little taste of my medicine. She'll get the revenge she deserves and we'll see who Toby comes running to."
When I came home, after my mom dropped off Toby, I had a snack. I couldn't believe that I survived a whole school day with him, especially the first day! Just then, I got a call.
"Hello?" I said.
"I knew it! I knew that you liked him" a voice said.
I checked the number, it was blocked.
"Who is this?" I asked.
"It doesn't matter. I've watched you the whole day and I knew it! You are such a back-stabbing, selfish, and rude jerk."
I heard my mom coming up the steps. I hung up and disconnected the phone cable.
"Hi, sweetie. Do you have any papers for me to sign?" my mom asked.
"Sure do!" I said, handing her the papers.
My mom couldn't know anything about the phone call. I didn't want her to worry. My mom was one of those people that never worried about anything unless it was serious. The phone call was serious, but I didn't want to tell her. I had to handle it on my own. I'm old enough, right? So when she went back downstairs I started drawing. I tried not to worry about the call. Maybe they got the wrong number or something. It was pretty creepy to think about someone "watching" you. Before I knew it, it was dinner time. I wasn't really hungry though so I got a little bit of food.
"Aren't you more hungry than that?" My mom asked.
"No, I had a pretty big lunch."
"Well, alright" my mom said.
I felt so bad, but honestly I felt a rush of adrenaline. So when I finished dinner I called Toby.
"Hello?" he asked.
"Hey Toby, it's Aurora."
"Oh hey! What's up?"
"Can I come over?"
"Uh, sure! Let me ask!"
I heard a rustling on Toby's end because he was asking his mom.
"OK, you can come over!" Toby hung up.
I went downstairs and asked my mom.
"Sure!" she said.
So, I got my shoes on and headed across the lawn to Toby's. I knocked on the door.
"Come in!" I heard a voice yell.
They left their door unlocked? Maybe they unlocked it because they knew I was coming over. Why did I always analyze things? I'm such an idiot. I walked in and saw Toby, his mom, and dad eating TV dinners. My family didn't do that. Everything was home cooked.
"Hi! Come closer, we don't bite!" Toby's mom said. "My name's Jackie!" she smiled.
Toby's dad's name was William and he said to call him Billy. He also has a sister named Angie and a brother also named William. His parents were really nice. Toby finished his dinner and he took me up to his room. It was messy but it didn't matter.
"So..?" Toby was smiling.
"I wanted to tell you something" I said.
"Sure, what's up?"
He was so gentle and caring with his words. What am I saying?! I can't like Toby!
"Well, I got a call after school today. This person was telling me to watch my back and how I back-stabbed them and stuff."
"Did you know who it was?"
"No, the number was blocked."
"Well, that's not good. I would just ignore it."
"That's what I did. They also said that you liked me or that I liked you or something like that. It was totally weird."
Toby and I stopped to look at each other and we gazed into each other's eyes. He started to blush and my face was getting hot so I knew I had to be blushing too. Just then, Toby's mom walked in. We stopped looking at each other and Toby got a root beer from his mom. The shake had one straw. When Toby's mom left he got out another straw.
"Want to share?" he asked holding the straw out to me.
I hesitated but I grabbed the straw, took the paper off of it and stuck it in the soda. We started sipping. It was really good! I hadn't had a root beer in forever. He kept on looking at me and I kept looking at him. Good lord Aurora, you can't like Toby! You just can't. If Julie would ever happen to find out about this night she would freak out! She liked him a lot it seemed. I hung out with Toby until 8 o' clock. The whole 2 hours was full of laughing and giggling about the stupidest things. We were watching 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' on television and telling stories. When I had to leave he hugged me.
"Thanks for coming over. I kind of had a hard first day at school, not many people talked to me and I wasn't quite used to the whole new school thing" Toby said.
We hugged once again and I left. On the short walk back across my lawn I was thinking about what he said when I left. Maybe Toby wasn't as outgoing as I thought. Was he nervous or scared? I didn't know much about his past so I couldn't really think of why he would be shy. He was so nice and I realized how much I was really starting to like him as a friend.
