Chapter 23:
Toby was a great father. He kissed Peter on the top of his head everyday. I had never seen Toby so happy before. His eyes would light up with happiness when PJ would smile. He would help me with everything. Toby even started putting PJ in some of his videos, especially his gaming videos. I laughed every time I saw PJ smile and try to grab the camera. He wouldn't reach it. Sometimes, Toby would let PJ play the game. He would just hit random buttons, it was hilarious.
One morning, I woke up and Toby wasn't in bed and PJ wasn't in his crib. I started to panic a little, (mother instinct kicking in). I put on an oversized t-shirt, which recently became my outfit of choice, and went downstairs. I heard music in the kitchen. The radio was blaring 'Love Shack'. I walked in the kitchen and saw Toby flipping pancakes, making eggs, and cooking bacon. He was singing along to the chorus, using a spatula as the microphone. He was flipping pancakes when the next verse came. I leaned on the entryway and smiled. Toby moved his waist towards me and PJ looked at me. I grinned really big and waved at him. Toby had PJ in a baby carrier. I kept on leaning on the doorway and then, Toby saw me.
"How long were you standing?," he asked me, surprised.
"Oh, a couple of minutes. I see you're making breakfast" I said.
"Yeah, I am" he walked over to me and kissed me.
I looked up at him and smiled, then I kissed PJ and fixed his hair.
PJ looked a lot like Toby. He had the same now and his hair was curly like Toby's. Except PJ's eyes were brown. They were a molten brown, the kind that looks like chocolate. It made it hard to get mad at him. We sat down and ate breakfast.
"Mmm, these eggs are good" I told Toby, looking at him and smiling.
"Thanks!" he said and smiled back.
"Haha" PJ laughed and looked at us with wide eyes.
He was smushing the applesauce I gave him.
PJ was 8 months old. His first word was, "daddy". Of course, he was a daddy's boy. It was cute. He would look at his dad and smile at him. Toby would grab his hands and mess with his little fingers. I often heard him whisper to himself, "Kid, I love you so much." It made me smile.
Today, Toby and I were going to take PJ to get some shots today. I knew he wouldn't like it, but he had to get them. So, at 11 a.m., we put PJ in his car seat and Toby drove to the doctor's office. Toby and I held hands on the drive over. Toby looked over at me and smiled. I smiled back at him. I looked back at him and bit my lip while smiling. I looked back at PJ and he was looking out the window. We arrived at the doctor's office, got Toby out of his seat, and went inside. We waited for 5 minutes until we went to the room. A nurse came in the room a couple of seconds later and had 3 needles.
"Hi," the nurse said.
"Hi" I said, smiled, and stood beside PJ.
"I have to give him three shots today" she said.
The nurse got the first needle and PJ's eyes widened. The nurse cleaned his arm and gave him the shot. I saw PJ's eyes get teary. I knew he was going to cry. The nurse gave the next shot and his eyes started tearing up even more and his face got red. Then, the last shot was given, the nurse bandaged him, and she left. She told us to take our time and that we could get a sticker at the front desk. Then, PJ started bawling his eyes. I went to pick him up and he said, "No, I want daddy!." I let Toby get Peter and then Toby and I held hands and walked to the front desk to get a sticker. We asked PJ what sticker he wanted and he pointed to the one with Bob the Builder on it. I grabbed it and handed it to him. He smiled at it. He handed it to Toby. He peeled the sticker and stuck it on PJ's shirt. PJ looked down at his shirt and touched the sticker. We walked back out to the car and put PJ in his seat and drove home. Then, I made lunch while Toby and Peter watched some football that was on. It was a rerun, but PJ still enjoyed it. I walked into the living room and PJ was sitting on Toby's lap and he was patting his hands together. Toby had put a baseball cap on PJ's head backwards. He looked adorable. Also, Toby put a jersey, way too big, on PJ. I smiled and walked back into the kitchen and finished making lunch. After lunch, we all sat down and watched some cartoons.
Then, I got a call.
