Mikey was right. The next day, the two held hands walking into the school grounds, where they were greeted by their fully sober group of six friends.

They turned around, and on spotting the couple, burst into laughter, pointing and jeering. The pair flipped them off and leapt away from each other as if the other was burning hot. They stood as far away from each other as possible, refusing to look at anyone as they blushed fiercely.

They forgot about how weird it seems to everyone else that they're dating their worst enemy.

"Oh my God, I hate you so much, you bitch!" Frank put on a pretentious high voice as he pretended to kiss Gerard with exaggerated movements, while everyone laughed at them. Mikey and Pete blushed harder, and frowned.

Unfortunately, before they could react further, Brendon rushed up to the group.
"Guys, have you seen Ryan anywhere? He won't answer my calls or texts! Something's up, I know it!" He wiggled his fingers stupidly in panic, before running them through his hair.
Ray sent him away without information, nobody was keen on Brendon and didn't really want him around for longer than was necessary.

Pete glanced at Mikey and smirked, Brendon was getting what he deserved. After revealing their relationship, Brendon was finally on the receiving end of 'ruining lives'.

But Mikey only looked away, refusing to look at Pete. He didn't think he was able to handle a public relationship with Pete, after the sudden switch from hate after many years. It felt weird and unusual, almost impossible.

For some reason, now that everyone knew about their relationship, Mikey decided that ignoring Pete would be the best option, pretending that the night everyone found out never happened. Or any other time with Pete, including the years they spent as enemies. Pretending to not know Pete felt like the best option.

He tried avoiding Pete as often as he could, and this lasted about three days before Pete became too concerned.

Pete had tried his hardest to get his boyfriend's attention, and was left confused and offended every time he was ignored or abandoned. Mikey's behaviour was strange, and Pete needed to confront him about it.

Mikey walked to his locker after history, and noticed Pete walking up to him slowly. Mikey panicked, shoved his books into his locker, and speed walked in the opposite direction, pretending to have not seen his boyfriend and leaving behind Pete, who was standing by his locker and was left abandoned once more.

Pete was yet again confused, not really sure what just happened, but he saw Mikey's locker keys still in the lock. He used this as another excuse to approach him later, Mikey would have to talk to him if he couldn't access his locker.

He strolled across the corridor, grumbling as he pondered over why his boyfriend was now ignoring him, and he walked into the music room, sitting on the table with his bass.

"Waiting for Mikey, are we?" Patrick laughed at Pete, who glared at the former, but his lack of response said otherwise.

"Aww, thought so!" Joe yelled across the room, giggling.

After half an hour, Mikey hadn't turned up to the music room, and Pete was worried. Everyone else had shown up, but Mikey was missing once more.

Of course he would be worried about someone he cared about, right? This was the third day he hadn't showed up to the music room, and Mikey's only friends were there.

So he went off on a private search mission. Mainly to find Mikey, but partially to get away from the annoying guys in the music room.

Finding Mikey wasn't that hard. He was fine, and he was reading a book in the canteen in the corner, next to two boys. The two looked up, and one, Pete reckoned his name was something like Tyler, was smirking and glancing between Mikey and Pete, while the other (probably something like Josh, or some shit) was raising his eyebrows suggestively.
Clearly word had gotten around the school.

Pete walked up to Mikey and sat in front of him but Mikey didn't look up from his book, completely ignoring Pete.

"I have your locker keys, Mikeyway." Pete coughed to grab the boy's attention, and Mikey glanced up from his book, but didn't look Pete in the eyes. Pete placed the keys on the table, and Mikey snatched them away without another word, his hand pocketing them in one quick movement, and returned to his book.

"Mikey?" Pete asked, confused by the lack of conversation on his boyfriend's side. So he tried again.
"Mikes?"

Mikey's grip tightened on the book at the nickname, making his knuckles white.

Pete was getting pretty pissed, and grabbed the top of the book, placing it down on the table. Mikey looked at the table, eyebrows furrowed.

"What's up with you, Mikey?" Pete's voice was soft, but the words came out harshly. He looked right into Mikey's eyes, and when Mikey finally looked up at him, he could see the pain and fear in his eyes.

Mikey finally let go of the book and placed his head in his hands. He cursed silently, then eventually spoke up,
"You know how you're scared of the shit we're going to get?"

Pete nodded slowly, not really catching on.

"Yeah, well, that's not what I'm really worried about. I mean, I don't really care about that. My friends are like that, I get it everyday. It's just... after hating you for so long, I don't know if I can handle..."
Mikey waved his hands in the air, trying to form words,
"Liking you. Like, especially in public." Mikey hesitated for a moment, before continuing,
"I really like you, but... I don't know. It's weird having these feelings for you, like feeling something that isn't hatred for you is strange. It feels too odd. I've also never been in a relationship with a boy, and I know that we know each other really well, and have done for a long time, but..."

Mikey looked up, hoping Pete understood. And he did, the look in his eyes showed it all. Mikey was scared. Mikey wasn't used to the unknown and he hated it. He wasn't ready, the unknown felt weird for him.

Pete felt like his heart shattered into tiny pieces. He opened his mouth to say something, but closed it again. He wasn't sure what to say.

Did Mikey want to go back to hating him again? Did Mikey never actually like him? Questions buzzed through his head like a swarm of bees, and before he could help it, he blurted one out.
"Are you breaking up with me?" Pete didn't expect his own voice to project his heartbreak, but his words cracking did this perfectly.

Mikey bit his lip, as if thinking, but nodded gently.

Pete didn't know what to do, so he got up and ran before Mikey could see him cry. He ran out into the corridor, ran past the music room, past many classrooms, and reached the emptied part of the school.

He ran into the practically abandoned toilets, which were empty like always, and sat on the floor, right in the centre of the room.
Tears poured out of his eyes before he could stop them, and he was soon a silent crying wreck. He couldn't stop them, and he certainly didn't understand why.

After he was drained from tears, Pete lay on the dirty toilet floor, contemplating his life. It was one of his few hobbies, and he usually did it at three in the morning when he couldn't sleep. He remembered that one morning when he and Mikey were in the park, just talking in the dark at stupid o'clock.

He thought about why he just cried, and more than anything, he was really confused as to why he did. Crying meant he cared that Mikey hurt him, meaning he cared about Mikey. But since when did he care so much about Mikey?

Three weeks ago, if you mentioned Mikey's name, he would spit in disgust. But now, things have changed. He realised how much of a cool guy Mikey was, and fell for him.

He really cared for Mikey.

It's so much easier to fucking hate someone, but if someone told Pete to hate Mikey now, he'd find it impossible.

Pete thought about this for another several minutes, before sitting up.

"Shit." He said to the silence around him. "I think I love Mikey Way."
