I know this story is in third person, but the chapter will focus on whoever the chapter is for.
one. preston.
"How far are we from home?" I ask my father, playing with the zippers on my jacket.
"Not too far Darling" He shakes his head, stopping at a red light. I had a great relationship with my father, though it could be better. I had moved out a while ago, once I had worked on taking over my father's business and getting it under my control.
A strong jolt to the car, a sleek BMW, causes my dad and I to fly forward, as well as deploying the airbag. I gasp loudly, coughing as I get out of the car.
"Are you okay?" My father asks, and I nods "Oh, your lip" He says, examining the busted lip that I had just received.
"Do you understand what you could've done?" My father begins to yell at the man who had just hit the car "Do you have any idea who I am?"
"No, sir" The man shakes his head.
"You are going to get one huge bill from my insurance company"
"Sir, please don't. I don't have the money to fix it" He pleads "I barely have a place to live"
"Father..." I trail off, as if telling him to be nice.
"No, Preston, this car is thousands of dollars" He waves his hands in the air.
"But you can't make him pay that much to fix it" I shake my head, walking over to my father "Hi, I'm Preston" I hold out my hand, and the man gladly takes it.
"I'm Austin" He smiles politely.
"I'm sorry about him" I smile shyly.
"It's alright, I understand" He brushes it off "I'd be upset too, if that was my car"
"What is the point of this?" My father asks angrily.
"Father, please" I hold up her hand "Are you good at physical work?" I ask Austin, and he nods.
"Top of my class in carpentry" He says proudly, and I smile.
"I believe I may have a way to fix this for you. I've just bought a house, and it needs a lot of work. So, if you help me with that, as well as some gardening, I'll pay for my father's car for you" I offer, and Austin's eyes widen.
"Really?" He asks, and I nod "Thank you" He holds out his hand, and I shake it again. I walk to the car and pull out a blank card and a pen, writing down my address and phone number.
"Here you go, come by tomorrow morning and we'll go over everything"
"Thank you so much" He says again.
"It's not a problem, I apologize about my father once again" I give him a warm smile and a nod before walking back to my fathers car and climbing inside. My father gets in after me, with a huff and drives off to my house.
"Why'd you let him off so easily?" My father asks once we arrive at my house.
"Because he had no money. Are you trying to take money that he doesn't have?"
"You're too nice to people" He huffs.
"No, you're just too mean to people" I roll my eyes. This is where we didn't get along. I was sweet and sympathetic towards everyone, but my father, was the exact opposite. He showed no sympathy towards everyone, and for that we butt heads constantly.
"So now, you're going to let some random boy into your house not knowing anything about him"
"If he kills me, at least I was nice to him in the beginning" I shrug, and he scoffs.
"That attitude will get you killed" He points a finger at me, and I shrug "I'll call you later" He says, walking out of my house and driving back to his. I walk up the steps of my house, changing into a pair of pajamas and laying in my giant bed, falling asleep for the night.
The next morning I wake up, and change into a skirt and a spaghetti strapped shirt with a pair of heels, walking to my bathroom. I put on make-up, and walk down the steps, looking out the window to see a cab pulling up outside.
I walk out of the front door and to the cab, smiling brightly "Good morning" Austin smiles, handing the cab driver a ten dollar bill.
"Good morning" I reply, and Austin looks up at my house in awe "You like it?" I ask, laughing quietly.
"It's intimidating" He chuckles, and I lead him inside.
"It's too much I know, but according to my father, money is power"
"He's not wrong" Austin shakes his head "You don't really know how much it affects you until it's all gone" He frowns.
"I'm sorry"
"Don't worry about it" He shrugs it off.
"Well, let's get on with it" I smile, walking up the steps "So, I have a couple of these rooms that need to be painted" I say, pointing to a couple of rooms. I walk to the balcony, that over looks my pool "I need the patio redone around the pool" I motion around the pool, leading him to the bathroom.
"The tub needs to be bigger" I sigh, walking back down the steps "I could've just told you out here about the pool" I chuckle "But uh, I would like some help in the garden. I'll do most of it but a little help would be nice" I smile, and Austin returns it "But, I think that's all" I click her tongue.
"I can do that" He nods, as if it's nothing.
"Thank you for this" I grin.
"No, thank you" Austin says "I can't explain how much this means to me"
My phone rings on the counter, and I answer it, a woman on the other end "Hello?"
"Hi, is this Preston?" The woman asks.
"Yes this is, may I ask who's calling?"
"I'm a friend of Austin. I need to speak with him"
"Of course" I say, holding the phone out to Austin "It's for you"
Austin looks at the phone in confusion before answering it, listening to the woman talk "Again?" He asks with a sigh "Yeah, yeah, I'll be there soon" He hangs up the phone, handing it back to me.
"Sorry about that" He apologizes.
"It's no problem, but I don't want to keep you if someone needs you. Would you like a ride home?" I offer "Come on" I grab my car keys, leading Austin out to the garage. I turn on the light, revealing a shiny Maserati and open the door to the garage. Austin and I get into the car, and I drive him home, following his directions.
"Thank you for this"
"It's no problem. I'll see you tomorrow" I smile, and Austin climbs out of the car, walking up to the run down house, and once he's inside, I drive myself back home, wondering who was on the phone earlier.
