Thomas backed away. "Sam," he said,"I'm so sorry. I-I didn't mean-"
I cut him off. "Is that why you told me to run? Because of that thing that's inside you?"
Thomas hung his head. "I should have told you..."
"You should have told me a lot of things, Thomas." I sighed and reached out a hand towards him. "I will forgive you if you help me up. And if you don't want forgiveness, still help me up. My leg is killing me."
Thomas grabbed my outstretched hand and pulled me up. The moment I placed weight on my broken leg, I collapsed. Blood leaked out of my shoulder in a steady stream. The lack of blood was starting to make me feel dizzy. "Here," Thomas said, crouching beside me. He gently ran his fingers over my shin. Then, without warning, he grabbed my leg and snapped the bones into alignment. I screamed from the sudden pain. "Sorry," Thomas muttered. My leg was encased in ice, surprisingly warm ice.
Thomas then ripped a long strip from his shirt and bandaged my shoulder. "What," I asked, "no ice bandage?"
He gave me a small smile. "If I encased your shoulder, the blood would pool up inside your body. There is a thing called blood poisoning, you know."
Using his shoulder for balance, I pulled myself up so I was standing. I winced harshly as I put weight on my broken leg. Thomas shot up and caught me before I could fall again.
"You shouldn't be walking on that leg," he said firmly. I let out a weak laugh.
"You’ve got a better plan?" I asked.
Without warning, Thomas picked me up and held me bridal style. "Whoa there, Romeo," I protested.
"Forget it," he said, "you're not walking." He started to carry me towards the dungeon door, but stopped in front of Damean's limp body.
He wasn't dead, my luck wasn't that good. There was a large slit in his chest. Damean's nose was bent at an unnatural and an impish smile played on his lips. His waxy face was torn to shreds. It was like looking at a paper-mache doll whose face was attacked by some kid with scissors. It was gruesome, even more so without blood,
Thomas turned and tried to open the heavy door. It refused to budge. He placed his palm flat against the wood, ice encased the door. He kicked it and the wooden door shattered along with the icy shell. But instead of spiraling stairs leading up, there was a wall.
"Perfect," Thomas hissed, "Now how are we going to get out?"
I thought for a moment. There was a book I once read; it was about a boy who learned about a plan to kill the king. Then the king thought the boy was the assassin and threw him in the dungeon. How did the boy escape again? A light-bulb turned on in my head.
"Thomas," I said, "put me down."
"Sam, this isn't the time for-"
"Just do it, I've got an idea." Sighing, Thomas put me down gently. I got down on my hands and knees and started looking for cracks in the floor. "Check the walls for unusual cracks. There might be a trap-door somewhere."
"And if there isn't?"
I looked up at him. "Then we're stuck in here until Damean regenerates and wakes up. Do you think he'll miss an opportunity to kill you and kidnap me in the same second? There has to be a trap-door or a secret corridor or something along those lines."
Thomas started to run his fingers against the concrete walls. We looked high and low, every second my hope was diminishing. "Sam!" Thomas called. "I found something!"
I crawled over to where he stood. Thomas pointed to a loose stone. Without a second thought, he pressed it. A hidden door swung open. Inside, there was nothing but darkness. Thomas scooped me back up and walked inside. The door slammed behind up, encasing us in darkness.
