"Can you please tell me where we are going? It's driving me crazy! You know I hate surprises." I ask Ethan as we stop at an intersection.
"No, we will be there soon. Surprises won't kill you. They keep you on your toes."
"Fine," I sigh. Twenty minutes after driving we pull up to a parking lot with several cars and bikes parked in it. There are large spray painted steel doors and a guy with saggy pants standing outside of it.
"Where are we?" I ask, noticing the guy with saggy pants staring at me.
"C'mon," Ethan ignores my question and opens the door. I slide out of his truck and stand beside him closely as we approach the guy guarding the large doors. I hear music thumping from the other side of the doors. Is this some sort of outside club?
Ethan whispers to the man and he nods abruptly before knocking four times on the door. A loud creaking noise erupts from the doors as they begin to open. I intertwine my fingers with Ethan's as the doors slide open.
My eyes get wide as I see a lot of different booths with signs surrounding the perimeter of the venue. I notice several people with skateboards skating around and my mouth drops open.
"You brought me to a skatepark?" I squeal, not even attempting to hide my excitement.
"Yes, I remember how much you use to love it but then life happened and you've not had the chance to do it much so I thought you might like taking a break from life and getting back on the board?" He smiles at me and I jump into his arms, hugging him tightly. He spins me in a circle and I smile wide. I am so happy. I had no idea this was coming. Maybe surprises aren't so bad after all.
Ethan walks me over to a booth with several boards lined against the wall. A girl with vibrant pink hair smiles at me. I notice her lip ring flash in the sunlight.
"Two boards please," Ethan speaks up and the girl nods.
"Which boards would you guys like?" The girls says, stepping to the side so we can get a better view of the skateboard collection.
"I'll take the green skull one," Ethan points to the one on the highest shelf and the girl retrieves it for him, handing it over the table.
My eyes scan over the variety of boards and I can't make up my mind. I love them all. They're so beautifully painted and designed. I keep looking until my eyes land on the most perfect board I have ever seen.
"I'll take the Gotham Skyline board!" She smiles at me and hands over the board.
"Good choice. Here are your helmets and knee pads! Have fun!" The girl waves to us and we walk over to the skate park section. Music booms throughout the park and you can also hear the wheels scratching against the concrete as several kids roll around on their boards, doing tricks and showing off to their buddies.
"I don't even remember how to skate," I half joke to Ethan.
"Sure you do. Just get on it and roll." He smiles clipping his helmet straps together. I buckle my knee pads and strap on my helmet. I decide to attempt the pool first.
I stand anxiously on the side, my board barely tipping over the edge. I take a deep breath and lean forward. The wind blows my hair back and I hear the wheels scrape across the concrete as I swerve the board in the direction I wish. I do a flip from the side and hear cheers coming from a group of kids watching me. I smile and continue to show off a little. I missed this so much. I forgot how much I love skating.
I roll out of the pool and make my way to the half pipe. I do a donkey kick and hear more cheering and wolf whistles. I continue to smile as I swerve around gracefully. I do a one eighty and the crowd that's gathering around me begins clapping and yelling loudly enough to drown out the music. Half of the kids cheering are boys about fifteen years old. There are a few girls around the same age and a little older.
