Pocky

It kind of annoyed Dipper that Pacifica and Mabel were friends now. He liked that the two had made up and all, but he didn't particularly enjoy that they got to have their girl time when Mabel would sometimes push in on the time he spent with Pacifica alone. Still, it wasn't that big of a deal, he just kind of wished he could be in on it sometimes.

"Hey, Dippity Dop!" Mabel called out to him with finger guns. She was strutting through the house proudly with four bags on each wrist. Pacifica was behind her, bearing much more than Mabel. Typical. "We're back from the mall!"

"I can see that," He muttered, glancing up from the journal. He'd been looking at it all day but he still couldn't crack the code. Maybe there was nothing to crack. But the author was absolutely brilliant. How could he leave something that meant nothing?

"Dippy! Hello? Earth to nerdling?" His sister cried loudly as she waved her hand rapidly in front of his face.

"W-what?! Oh, yeah... Sorry..."

"You zoned out like two seconds after you said something." Pacifica sighed, rolling her eyes. "I don't know how you can get so caught up in a book."

"It's not just a book!" He retaliated quickly, clear offence in his voice.

"Then what is it?" She challenged, raising an eyebrow at him. Her hands were on her hips and that's how you knew she was ready to argue. It was like the way a horse draws its hoof back in the dirt when it gets angry.

"It's... It's... Nothing." He sighed, knowing that he wouldn't be able to tell her. He couldn't tell her, no matter what! He couldn't let her fall in to the evil clutches of Gravity Falls' craziness. She'd already been through enough with that ghost and the Wendy demon. He wouldn't let anything else happen to her.

"That's what I thought," She sneered, showing off that small side of her that he didn't like so much. It always felt like it hung in the air when she was like that, and it made him feel as if he didn't even want to speak to her. But he knew that wasn't all of who she was. He knew it was learned behaviour.

"So what did you guys buy at the mall, anyways?" Dipper questioned, changing the subject in an effort to soften Pacifica's personality. Luckily, it was definitely enough to distract her.

"Oh! Well, as you can imagine, I bought a lot of clothes." Pacifica snickered a little, "I have to go to my friend Tiffany's birthday party this weekend, so I have to get all dressed up."

"Ah. Cool." Dipper replied, "You don't really sound interested in attending Tiffany's party, Paz."

"Well, I'm not, to be honest. Tiffany isn't all that nice, but her parents are friends with my parents, soooooo..." She shrugged. "It's basically mandatory."

He nodded in acknowledgment as Mabel excitedly started babbling about what she'd purchased. It sounded like she'd mostly bought a lot of clothes, stuffed animals, and vampire-romance novels. It was all quite repetitive until she pulled out a box.

"And I bought this thing called Pocky!" She told him as she held the box obnoxiously close to his face. "It's from Japan, and I guess it got popular here. So I thought I should try it. Apparently there's a romantic game that goes along with it too, so I can play it with any cute boys that I meet!"

"What's the game?" Pacifica asked, sounding suddenly intrigued. Dipper suddenly felt embarrassed, as he felt he knew where Pacifica was going with this.

"Pocky comes in the shape of a stick. Basically, you put two people on each end of the Pocky and you bite to make the Pocky shorter and shorter. The first person to pull back loses, but sometimes the players are awfully determined and end up with a smooch instead!" Mabel giggled, jumping up and down excitedly. "I hope I meet some boys to play this with."

"Hey, Mabel?"

Pacifica Elise Northwest, don't you dare. Dipper thought nervously. He knew exactly what she was about to do. He knew he'd get flustered last minute and Pacifica would win the game. Either that or they'd finally kiss, but he could almost guarantee that that wouldn't happen. He didn't want to pull away, but he knew he would. Girls made him jumpy.

"Yeah?"

"Do you think Dipper and I could have a stick of Pocky? You know, to play the game with? I want to see who wins."

There it is. He thought, feeling a blush start to spread across his cheeks. This whole thing was about to start for him, and all he could do was pray that it'd work out.

"Ooh, sure!" Mabel replied excitedly as she tore in to the box and pulled out a single stick of Pocky. "They're Strawberry flavoured!"

"Nice," The blonde said with a wink as she gently took the stick from Mabel's fingers. She placed one end in her mouth and urged Dipper to come forward and nip the other end.

He sighed, knowing that there was no escape from what was about to occur. So he simply moved forward and held the other end between his teeth. He tried to ignore the fact that Pacifica looked like a hungry wolf and that Mabel had pulled out her cellphone to snap a photo. This was either going to be embarrassing or upsetting, and he honestly couldn't help but feel as if it'd somehow manage to be both.

He cringed as he felt Pacifica's end of the Pocky snap. He was looking right in to her eyes which were twinkling with delight. Was she that eager to kiss him? Or was she just eager to win? Yet another mystery that surrounded the Northwest girl.

She was looking at him with such desire that it made Dipper actually feel uncomfortable. Then again, it wasn't exactly comfortable to have to kiss somebody when you knew you were going to mess it up.

Snap!

She just kept nibbling at the Pocky until it broke. He could feel his whole face heating up as the game went on.

"Pacifica..." He mumbled as he held the delicate Pocky between his teeth.

"What's up, buttercup?" She snickered from her end, "Getting ready to pull away or something?"

Yes, because I don't want to mess up kissing a pretty girl like you and I'm too nervous to get it right. I can't be set up for these things, I can't I can't I can't I can't I can't I can't I can't. I need it to be natural between the two of us. You deserve the perfect kiss Pacifica, and if we do it this way I can't achieve it.

"I..." He just couldn't get the words out, so he snapped the Pocky with his teeth. It made it look more like he was challenging her, and she seemed to like that. Unfortunately it didn't make things so good for him. His heart was pounding in his ears as he had to play along with the idea of a challenge. He bit on his end and she'd bite on hers. They went back and forth like that until finally they were so close that their lips would touch if either one of them took another bite. Dipper could tell that his crush was prepared to do so. His mind was giving him some kind of warning and before he knew what he was doing, he pulled away from Pacifica.

He didn't want to open his eyes. He didn't know if she would be offended or happy. He knew she liked to win, but he was sure that she really did want to kiss him. He wanted to kiss her too, but not like that. And not in front of Mabel!

The blonde sat across from him with the small stick of Pocky still between her teeth. She was staring at him, completely dumbfounded by what had just occurred. He had pulled away from her.

He was uncomfortable? She thought. I should have known. I should have known not to pressure him in to any kind of kiss without making sure he was comfortable.

"Pacifica, I'm-"

"No... It's okay..." She said quietly as she started to frown. "I'm the one who should be sorry. I... I pressured you."

"N-no! That's not it!"

"It's okay, Dipper, really. I should have understood." She tried to offer up a gentle smile, so he would think that she was fine. Truly, the idea that she'd sort of weirded him out was vivid in her mind. She'd never let him know that, though. He'd get too worried about her.

"Are you sure it's alright, Pacifica?"

"Yeah." She continued her fake smile, "Of course."
