The summer of 2010 was amazing! The best memories I have are from that summer. Finally summer holidays! We were about to leave on vacation for 2 weeks and guess who joined me!
Martijn of course!
Martijn couldn't stop visiting me after that one sad summer. We got closer and became the best friends ever! Since he was a lot at our house, my parents decided to take him with us.
They said it was a nice and humble guy and that we looked adorable together.
On the plane, Martijn let me hear some of his tracks he had made so far. He still didn't stop DJ'ing and he still does what he loves! His tracks were amazing! They reminded me of DJ Tiesto. But they were much better.
" Do you still play the guitar? " he asked, while taking his headphones of.
" Yeah "
" And, you like it? "
" No "
" Come on, tell your parents you want to stop! "
" They want me to have a good future, Martijn "
" That's bullshit! You can only have a good future by doing what you love! "
" I know that "
" They have to stop living in the future and start living in the present "
" I know that too " I laughed.
When we arrived in Rhodes we both put on our sunglasses and exit the airplane together. The warmth amazed me again, it does everytime we get here.
We had an amazing time together there! We had been swimming a lot, we visited the most beautiful places on earth and we enjoyed the sun and the heat!
That vacation was the best time I and Martijn ever had!
We stayed in this amazingly beautiful hotel, called Electra Palace. The hotel was big! It had like 3 restaurants, 3 different bars, 2 giant swimming pools and 2 buildings for the guests to stay. It was next to the beach, which was also so beautiful, you could just watch the waves coming and going for hours. The Greek food was delicious too!
I remember me and Martijn sitting in the bar next to the hotel, called The Rainbow, watching the World Championship football. We both liked soccer and ice cream, so that's what we did, we ate ice cream.
" I'm like super glad that your parents wanted to take me with them " his Dutch accent was actually so lovely to hear.
" Since this year they have been seeing you as their son that they never had " I said, focussing on the screen.
" But they had a son, they still have "
" Yeah, but I never really had a brother, I've told them that I see you as the brother I never had " I explained.
" Oh... " it looked like he wanted to say something but then he realised he better kept quiet.
" I really love you as my best friend, Martijn "
" And I love you too " he said.
If you think about it it's pretty weird that a 14-year-old boy hangs out with a 10-years-old girl. I loved the thing that he never changed. He is still the humble and sweet guy like when I first met him. He has always been giving me advice to deal with life and he's always so positive.
I also remember us playing in the swimming pool and having swimming races, which I always lost of course. We had also been to the sea a lot, just to enjoy the smell of bright seawater.
We had been to the Old City of Rhodes and we had bought some souvenirs. We had visited a little town close to the hotel and we had been playing with parrots!
I was so sad when we had to return home! I know all these people here because it was the 8th time I got here. They are like family. And the weather is so good and in The Netherlands it's always raining. The food was also better in Greece than back home. Just everything was better in Rhodes than in Holland.
In the airport of Rhodes, while my dad was handling stuff and my mum was buying parfume, I was just standing in front of the window, watching airplanes arrive and airplanes depart. I felt so sad. I just wanted to stay but I knew we couldn't.
Suddenly I felt a hand on my shoulder, and I immediately knew who's hand it was.
" Next year, you'll be back here " he sounded like a poet.
" I hope so "
" Come on, think about the good things, not everyone has the possibility to go on a vacation like this, you're lucky! " he made me smile again by saying this. He was right. There are so many people out there who are not able to go an a trip, or who can't visite any country they want.
I am a lucky one.
In the plane on our way back we were just talking and having fun and we did listen some music too, but most of all, I realised that I was never going to meet someone like him again. I needed to keep him close to me. He cared about me and I cared about him. My life has changed so much since I met him.
But I did meet someone like him again, she is totally different if you compare her with Martijn, but she had the same effect on my life in a different way.
Arrived at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, we did all we had to do before we could drive back home. We went to get our suitcases and then my parents bought us a drink because on a plane you get 1 little glass of Cola and that's it so we were kinda thirsty. And then we had to wait for a taxi.
As me and Martijn were trying to have fun after I cried for being back in this shitty country compared with Greece, I ran outside.
The street was really busy at this hour of the day and cars were driving by all the time. But I seemed to not realise. I just ran away from Martijn because he had to catch me. And as I see a car coming closer and closer and closer and I knew I couldn't avoid it...
Boom...
