"What time are you coming home?"

"I'm gonna be little late. Don't wait up for me." She almost didn't recognize his voice, monotonous almost.

"Okay." Then there was silence. His breathing was heard from the other side. Maine wanted to say something, but felt lost at words. She continuously fiddled with the hem of her shirt, hoping he'd say something—anything. She didn't care if it were something as mundane as hey, how was your day? or have you eaten yet? He hasn't asked those in a while now.

"Listen, I gotta go. I'll see tomorrow, okay?" She felt like he was just itching to get out if this conversation. It was kinda awkward. It shouldn't have to be like this. Her heart breaks a little.

"Okay. I—"

She stopped herself before she even continued finishing the sentence. She tried to cough to mask the awkwardness the took over. Suddenly, she heard a beep then the line was dead. Taking a deep breathe, she tried to hold back the tears that were threatening to fall.

She got off the couch then went to the kitchen to clean up some leftovers. Her attention turned to the empty plate placed where Alden used to seat. Hey, atleast that's one plate less to wash. She went and put what would've been his dinner on the microwave and reheat it, in case he was hungry when he gets home.

Seeing she was already done, she took a quick shower then started getting ready for bed.

It was funny, how she'd never felt so alone in her life despite sharing an apartment with her long time boyfriend. Boyfriend, huh. Doesn't seem like it, at least not anymore.

There was a time when she didn't have to cry herself to sleep every night. A time where she thought she'd never shed a tear for him. She remembered how every morning were spent laughing and playfully bickering—not having to wake up with cold, empty sheets he would always leave behind.

She didn't know where it all begun falling apart. How his arms stopped being the comfort they were. His touch doesn't seem to send chills down to her spine anymore. And when he kisses her, like it didn't mean anything. It used to meant something.

She doesn't know why all those things suddenly meant nothing. The thought of it completely frightens her because god dammit, she loved him and her heart breaks at the thought of knowing someone so much—from memorizing every freckle, every scar and the way his eyes crinkle every time he laughs—to looking at the same person, but this time as if he were just another person.

But people change and Maine had always thought that change is for the better. She was not the same lovesick girl with stars in her eyes three years ago. It's true that they've both changed, so much that their newfound differences had become a factor for them to start drifting apart. It wasn't long till she realized that the hand that she's been holding, is a hand that doesn't fit with hers like it used to.

That old Alden and Maine were the ones who used to look at each other with the same amount of admiration in their eyes and not like strangers passing by on the street. They were the ones who would always joke around, always living life so carelessly. They were so damn perfect for each other and they both knew that.
