v106.1: The Midnight Vigil

Globie and his master, Richard Sr., dropped by the vet's clinic at about midnight to pick up Philip. Everyone else who were there that afternoon already left, but Philip's master sensed that Philip wanted to stay, so he asked Dr. Yan to let Philip spend a few more hours there until his dad arrived.

Philip heard Richard Sr.'s voice, and another one. It must be the doctor, he thought. But he made no move to go anywhere.

He's staying right were he's been staying for the past six hours.

He picked up soft, padded steps coming toward him.

It was Globie.

The husky sat down beside him.

"Hello, Mr. Globie," said Philip.

"Hello, young man," said Globie. :

They sat, side by side, not saying anything.

Without looking at Globie, Philip asked, "How's Tellulah?"

The husky laughed a low laugh, and let out his long tongue. "That girlie Great Dane is a paw full of trouble, if you know what I mean. Remember that pea-brained bulldog we shooed away from the Pebbles, the little Shih Tzu? I saw her with HIM this afternoon. HIM! She just puts herself out there, you know?"

Philip smirked and shook his head. "Women."

Globie chuckled. "Ha, yeah. Women."

More silence passed between the two.

"Mr. Globie?"

"Hmmm?"

"Remember what you said about being stronger by having someone to protect?"

"Yes, why?"

"If that's the case, then I'm nothing but a weak, stupid bastard."

Globie sighed. At this rate, no amount of growling and nudging will convince Philip otherwise.

"They're talking about putting her down tomorrow if she doesn't wake up," said Philip. Globie, then, noticed a few tears fall on the floor. "They have no bloody right! Who are they, anyway? Just because they're our humans they could just decide like that? How dare they do that! And I can't even stand up for her! So tell me, Mr. Globie, what part of this whole thing am I not a weak, stupid bastard? WHAT PART???"

Globie inched a bit closer, and put his paw on Philip's head. "You're a smart-ass, young man. Figure it out. Besides, you need to dog-up, remember? Look there," he said, pointing to the three puppies beside Nini. "You have to dog-up for them now."

Philip looked at the puppies. "Well, at least I know that God Gave Me Youths," he cackled feebly.

Globie shook his head. "Lame, Philip. Really lame. Tell you what, I'll pull my master's pants to signal him that we'll go ahead. Stay here for the night. All right?"

"All right."

With that, Globie got up and padded out of the room, leaving Philip and his little family behind.

Philip inched closer to where Nini was, being careful not to undo all the things that were stuck to her. He then, nudged her ear gently.

"You'd better live, Body-Joint. You'd better live. You hear me, empress? You hear me???"
