PROLOGUE
"The pages are still blank, but there is a miraculous feeling of the words being there, written in invisible ink and clamoring to become visible."
—Vladimir Nabokov
The dreaded Apocalypse had happened a hundred years ago, wiping out the majority of the human race.
Atypically, the nations were supposedly prepared. However, it was neither a nuclear war nor an epidemic. It was something improbable that no one had been ready for it.
Most humans never really believed in the existence of otherworlds. It was something that the human brain refused to process because it was something beyond the boundaries of human normalcy. Fear was a basic human emotion, and something not common was always a cause of fear.
Fear. Fear of the transcendence had been the downfall of the human race years ago.
Apparently, there were worlds co-existing with the world of the breathing. These worlds were separated by invisible barriers. For an unknown reason, a barrier had disintegrated, allowing the entry of otherworld beings.
It was like a sight from a gory fantasy movie—creatures devouring human flesh and destroying the human world.
The saving grace had come in the form of underground cities, which the government of each country had secretly built in preparation for the nuclear war.
While millions had been lost, thousands of lives had been saved.
Nuclear weapons became weapons of deeds instead of destruction. They had been used to eliminate the unforeseen interlopers.
It had been years before the human race had deemed it safe to live on the surface of the earth again. Rebuilding had took a long time, but it had been accomplished through unity.
Cities were built instead of countries. Different nations had merged into just one large community.
Everyone called it Novellis, the New World.
Novellis is a huge mass of land surrounded by water. It's a domed city. The huge glass dome covering the whole land is a precaution built to another possible otherworld invasion.
Novellis is a normal place—buildings, cars, stone houses, people with normal clothes—there weren't a lot of a differences from the Old World except for one thing—
—the existence of artificial humans called Simules.
Simules and humans get along well.
RJ is born in this world, a world where the real and the reel cohabit peacefully.
