Taking One for a Fellow Robin

Damian was now fourteen. He had been paired with someone he despised. Jason Todd. Yes. The  second Robin. The failed Robin. Bruce's ex partner. Dick's replacement. The guy who was set on taking Batman down. The guy who still kills. Damian would rather be paired with a monkey!

Damian and Jason were staked out in a where house where crooks would meet later in the night to discuss blowing up some of Gotham's most important buildings and with it, all the people who worked there or were visiting. That included Wayne manor. They sat on the concrete ground behind crates. Jason had taken a bottle of beer, cigarettes and a packet of chips. He crunched loudly and Damian bit his tongue as he tried his best to ignore the annoying man.

"So has B gotten you killed yet?"
Damian eyed Jason. He couldn't tell if he was joking or not.
"Tt- Todd you are quite annoying and I hate you"
"I'm not to fond of you either, brat"
Damian hated being called a brat.
"You don't even belong here, Todd. I will never understand why father decided to take you back"
Damian seethed.
Jason chuckled.
"Me either. Do you know what it's like to die, Baby bird?"
He had taken Damian by surprise. He hadn't insulted him back. In fact he had a look on his face that said he wanted to have a real conversation.

Damian didn't reply. In truth he had known exactly what it was like to die. And ever since he was brought back all he could think about was how he never wanted to go back. Taking the silence as not an answer, Jason continued.
"I was just a kid. Probably the same age as you. It scared me. I kept telling myself that Bruce would come. That Bruce would save me. I forgave my mother for everything. But there was a part of me that wished I never left. That I stayed with my happy little Bat family. When I crawled my way to the door and tried my best to get out and then the bomb hit 0. I braced myself for the worst. It wasn't like how I thought it would be. It wasn't scary or painful. My life didn't flash before my eyes. When that bomb exploded I was overcome with darkness, quite and a coldness. I wasn't afraid. I was lonely... And cold"

Damian stared at Jason with disbelief. Jason wasn't the type of guy to be open about this kind of stuff.
"Why're you telling me this?"
Jason shrugged and lit his smoke.
"Because I knew you went through the same"
Damian had a flash back and shivered. He was about to reply when they heard people talking. They glanced around the crates, trying not to be seen. There was a group of men in their mid 40s all planning how to blow up Gotham. Jason pulled his Red Hood mask over his head and stomped out his smoke. Damian grabbed his bo staff and they charged at the men.

But the men were prepared and pulled out guns. They shot left right and centre. The Robins dodged and began to fight the men and were almost done when Jason looked up to see a man standing on the walkway. A gun in hand. Jason jumped in time and took the bullet for Damian. In complete shock, Damian threw a batarang at the criminal and bent down on his knees, pulling Jason's head into his lap.
"Todd, you fool! H-how could you-"
Damian was shaking with fear. He tore his cape and used it as a bandage. Tying it tightly around Jason's large gun wound on his abdomen. Jason laughed. He was covered in blood.
"Your welcome, brat"
Jason chuckled until his chuckle became a discomforting cough.
"It's just like you to be on your death bed and still crack a joke, Todd"
Damian got to his feet then helped Jason stand up. Jason put his arm around Damian's neck and they made their way home.

Damian watched Jason sleep. Alfred had patched Jason up over six hours ago and he hasn't left his side. Bruce walked in and sat beside him.
"How is he?"
Damian just gave a nod. He gave his father a sideways glance before asking,
"Why'd you take him back?"
Bruce was taken back by this. They sat in silence for five minutes before he replied.
"Because... He's my son"
And that's all that was needed to be said. Jason woke up and Damian moved to leave the room.

The next day Damian went back to Jason's room and gave him a thank you and from then on Jason never let the proud Robin live it down. He should have just let Jason bleed to death..
