It had been three months since you broke up with Newt.
Well, that was an understatement of the situation in your opinion. What it really felt like was:
It had been three months since Newt had completely ripped your heart off your chest, threw it to the ground and walked all over it while Moira held his hand, proud of him for what he did. Yeah, that felt like it captured at least half of what it felt like then.
Even the greenies that continued to come up every month quickly found out about the whole situation. You figured it couldn't really be helped, there were only three girls to introduce and since Newt did all the Greenie Tours it wasn't really hard for them to figure it out. Not when Moira would go all kissy-kissy to the Second-In-Command when he introduced her, and Teresa would flip him off, and you would pretend not to hear him as he barely said your name anyway.
"Hey," your best friend's voice suddenly reached your ears as she nudged you lightly.
You realized you must have spaced out a bit as you fixed up the inventory in the Med-hut. You quickly turned to her, your tired eyes wide.
Teresa smiled sweetly at you, but you could see the concern in her eyes. She licked her lips and smirked at you, leaning in as if she had the juiciest gossip in the Glade (next to yours, of course). "Fry's trying out a new dish for dinner tonight, apparently. Do you think we'll survive?"
You forced out the chuckle that was suck in your throat from what she said, "I know my way 'round the kitchen, don't worry T'res." you smiled before turning back to your work.
"Good that." she said and you felt her watch you for a moment as her smile disappears, then she goes back to work too.
You had to be thankful that your best friend treated you normally. She stopped asking if you were alright after two weeks, realizing that you never were and only lied about it. But it honestly hadn't been any easier as the days, weeks and months went by. It wasn't that it was getting harder either, it was just this constant pain that pulsed through you - unchanging, as if it couldn't possibly get any worse cause you were already rock bottom.
Minho was another one who helped a lot. He was the one who was by your side when you first broke up with Newt. He held you tightly when you cried for hours and ever since then he was there for you - always. Even though he was running in the maze all day, you found that every moment he was back in the Glade it was with you. He would immediately be by your side as soon as he was done with his Runner duties. He would sit next to you at dinner and pull a laugh from you with his sassy remarks. He would bring you to your hut and wish you good night, even stay by you for a while just to talk - really talk about everything, away from anyone's ears. You were so happy to have such a great friend in Minho, as well as your best friend Teresa - both of them helped you get through everything, truly.
They were like your new defense squad. It helped that they were probably the two most intimidating people in the Glade as well. You knew they gave looks to people who dared to ask if you were alright or not.
You felt that you could do it yourself, really. You found that you were great at acting, so interacting with people masked your feelings but it didn't stop the questions from being asked. You had noticeably lost weight from the lack of an appetite and you weren't getting enough sleep so your eye bags were a huge giveaway.
But with a look from your best friends, Gladers would drop the topic completely. They would even make sure you, Newt and Moira had the most minimal contact any moment in the Glade.
Seeing Moira and Newt's public displays of affection felt like a brass knuckle to your gut especially since you kind of felt that Moira would dangle her boyfriend in front of you any chance she could, all with a smirk on her face. Though that wasn't the worst. When you dared to look, you did notice Newt sometimes looked at you with this apologetic expression but it was the fact that even with that, he didn't do anything about it. He would kiss her back, run his hands through her hair or lace his arms around her right after. That broke your heart. It just added to everything you felt.
As the days continued, you did have one progression of this situation, you've come to the conclusion that it was bound to happen. You weren't surprised that Newt had fallen out of love with you. He deserved something more. You were worthless, pathetic. You were the only girl in the Glade back then, now, he saw that there were more girls. More girls that were more beautiful, ha more skill, had better personalities, and had more to offer. You felt like nothing compared to them.
Your self-esteem had been completely destroyed and you honestly believed, especially alone at night, that you not only felt it but that you were nothing. Even though Minho, the only one who really knew exactly how you felt, told you otherwise, you still couldn't believe him. You really wish you could believe his sweet words but every time you remembered Newt, you just knew you couldn't.
"You shanks done in here or what?" a familiar voice suddenly called from the door as it swung open. You turned to see the smiling face of the Runner who was your best friend. You softly smiled back at him.
Clint nodded, dismissing you and Teresa quickly hooked her arms over yours and started pulling you away as you both joined Minho towards the Kitchen.
"So how are my favourite Med-Jacks? Any crazy accidents from these shanks today?" he asks, heavy with sarcasm.
"We were waiting for your sorry butt to arrive at the Med-hut for that, Min." Teresa snaps back as she sits both of you down at the usual table.
"You're the shuckiest shuck-faced shuck, you know that T'res?" he sighed as he sat down across from you and she stuck her tongue out at him in response.
You felt a smile form slowly on your lips as they did their usual exchange. You were about to even let out a laugh until a voice joins your group that sends a shiver down your spine and your body to freeze.
"Mind if we join you today?" she purred.
You didn't have to look up to see Moira, hands intertwined with Newt as she practically clung onto him. You could feel her batting her lashes as she rested her head on the crook of Newt's neck.
You could feel your lip tremble and Minho's concerned eyes on you while Teresa glared at them. She half stood by the time you forced yourself to say "Sure."
All eyes were on you suddenly, all wide in shock. You couldn't look at any of them for a moment and then forced yourself to nod and turn to Moira, nodding at her with a smile. "Sure." you repeated, unable to hide the pain in your eyes as you said it.
"Great!" she practically shrieked and being sure to kiss Newt's cheek before pulling him down beside Minho. Of course, she sat across from you so you had the best view.
You tore your eyes from them and tried to keep the smile on your face as the dinner continued. Teresa held your hand under the table, her grip was soft, unlike the tough glare or sharp remarks she gave Moira and Newt. Minho's foot knocked into yours every now and then and every time you looked up at him, he sent you a small smile that you couldn't even return.
Moira was chatting away the entire time, even Newt seemed a bit quiet. She gave him little kisses, had him feed her spoon feed her, laughed obnoxiously at the stories about the two of them that she shared. She flaunted about every moment she had with your ex-boyfriend that you purposely avoided all this time.
It felt like knives to your ears and spears to your heart at every word from her pouty little lips, but it wasn't until Moira started making out with Newt right then and there - complete with moans to haunt your ears for the next lifetime - did you feel too uncomfortable. You looked for a second and that was enough because again, even with you literally inches away, he still didn't push her away or fight against it.
"I'm sorry, I'm going to go now. Been a tiring day." you said quickly, your voice going an octave higher and quickly rose from your seat.
"Aw, leaving already, Y/N? Something the matter?" Moira asked, obviously just to make it feel a lot worse, but you ran away so quickly that you couldn't respond.
As soon as you were gone, Teresa and Minho didn't hold back. The keeper of the Runners quickly stood up.
"Alright, that's it." he growled and then made his way over to Newt's side and grabbed his Machete strap pulling him to stand. He stomped all the way out of there, dragging him behind him out of the Kitchen.
Moira only smirked at herself, happy to see the damage that she had done. Teresa stood, slamming her hand down at the table as her eyes drilled into Moira's. "Alright you little shank, actually you're more than a shank, you klunky shuck-faced slinthead shank. You may have Newtie wrapped around your little shanky finger but you don't fool me, pull anything like this again on my best friend and I will shucking drag you into the maze, find a griever and throw you straight into it!"
Moira didn't seem fazed at all. In fact, she just kept the smirk on her face. "Wow, big words." she said sarcastically, and rolled her eyes and daringly leaned forward, lacing her voice with sharpness "Look, you don't scare me. You're just jealous cause you can't even get it with Thomas - or anyone, really. Aren't I right?"
Before she could respond, the girl stood up and smiled then swayed her hips as she walked away. Teresa fumed as she watched the girl move to the tables with some of the builders and talked to them closely as she walked her fingers over one of their muscular arms.
-----
"What the bloody hell, you shank?!" Newt screamed at the Keeper of the Runners when he roughly let go of him in the clearing.
Minho let out a frustrated puff of air before turning sharply at him, pointing a finger at the Second-In-Command. "What the actual shuck Newt?!"
"What are you buggin' goin' on about?!" he screamed back.
The Asian let out an exasperated yell, "You're supposed to be the smart shank around here and you're shuckin' telling me you don't know?! Ha!" Minho spat, "You're shucking killing her! Stop turning a blind shucking eye at her! I know you don't give a klunk about her anymore but can't you-"
"Don't you bloody say I don't care about her!!" Newt screamed.
"If you shucking cared you wouldn't be doing this to her!!" Minho screamed back, his voice getting even louder. "Okay, you shuking break her heart but as if that wasn't enough you show off all your kissy klunk with that shank Moira right in front of her shucking face!! You're killing her inside!! I'm so shucking scared I'm going to find her on the ground from jumping off the maze walls just like y-"
"Leave that out of it!!" The other boy screamed, so desperately that his voice cracked.
Minho shut up for a moment but he didn't stop glaring at him. The two boys watched each other breathing heavily with angry expressions. Fury overwhelming both of them as they tried to keep the number 1 rule of the Glade in their minds and not pounce on each other. The Asian talked first.
"You know what? Go back to your shucking girlfriend, already! I just wish I had told Y/N back when she arrived that I liked her and didn't back away just cause a little piece of klunk, aka: you, did! Maybe then you wouldn't have left her so broken up just cause another shucking shebean came up that klunk of a box!" Minho said before he quickly turned and walked away. He stopped the argument right there, mostly because he knew if it went on any longer, he would have punched Newt square in the face so hard he might have lost teeth in the process.
Newt had his hands over his hips and scratched his head frustratingly before he swung his leg to turn the other direction and walked back to Moira.
Minho made his way to your hut, knowing that it was your place to retreat to, away from any prying eyes. He reached your door and after calming himself down, he gently knocked since it was locked, "Y/N, it's Minnie, let me in, please."
You were crying with your back resting on your bed. Your chest was aching so badly and you felt like you were going to throw up the little dinner you ate.
"Come on, Y/N, don't ignore me, I know you're there." he continued, knocking again.
You still didn't respond, instead, buried your head to your knees that you held tight against your chest and cried harder.
"You know, the Builders' gonna have my shucking head if I break your door down, Y/N." he adds, his voice going a bit higher. You knew he was just trying to lighten up the mood but you really didn't feel amused.
"And Alby will probably throw my klunk butt in the slammer if he found out I broke into one of the shebean's huts, then what good-looking, perfect haired shank's gonna be taking my place for the run to-"
"Is this a shucking joke to you?" you cry as you swing the door open and your tearful eyes meet Minho's.
He's startled as he watches your pained face by the doorway and the pain seems to reflect on his, "No, look- I- shuck." he breathes out a frustrated sigh.
"Cause if it is, then you can shuck off now, Minnie." you say, your voice shaking, as you start to close the door.
"No!" he immediately calls, putting his hand on the door to stop it, not like you fought against his strength anyway. "Look, Y/N, I'm sorry. I- I didn't mean it like that."
You stood there and stayed quiet, letting him continue. "Shuck, how do I do this." he muttered under his breath as he scratched his hair.
"I-I just want to be here for you Y/N." Minho confessed, "I... I-I shucking care about you. I-I always have and I feel like such a shank for forcing myself away from you just cause a certain slinthead had romantic feelings for you."
Your eyebrows furrowed together and you realized your tears had stopped falling. Your voice was still shaking, "What are you trying to say?"
He let out another sigh and it looked like he was beating himself up in his head while he paused for a moment, "I made a really shucking selfish and stupid choice to not get too close to you because Newt liked you. And- And well, cause I'm a shank who was in love with you too, okay?!" he let it out almost exasperatingly as he threw his arms in the air. "A-and I still do, you know?" he added as he shifted his weight one leg and looked away from you.
Your mind started to run a hundred miles an hour and Minho noticed when he turned back to you, he reached to gently comfort you but you instinctively winced away and he quickly backed up. "I-I didn't mean for that to come out like it did. I mean, it's true but, uh, shuck!" he cursed at himself and grabbed a fist full of his own hair, "I, just, I genuinely care about you Y/N. I always have and I always will. Every shucking day I run in that maze and all that keeps me going is the thought of you."
"M-minnie," you started, using the special nickname you had for him, "I, just- I- I can't."
He took a breath, it was like this was the most tiring thing he had done in his life - and he was the Keeper of the Runners. "I-I'm not asking for anything, except that for you to be happy again. I'm not doing this because I want to be in a relationship with you - well, that would be a shucking dream come true - but I just want you to be alright again. I want to see you smile again and hear your contagious laugh that can brighten up any shank's day."
Tears started to fall down your cheeks and your chest started to ache, except unlike how it has been for the past months, there was a warmth in your heart. As if a dying flame had just been brought back to life. You looked at your best friend and saw the truth in his eyes.
Minnie cared about you, he always had, and that's when you knew that his sarcastic jokes that complimented you were always half true. He loved you and treated you the way you deserved even when you were in a relationship with Newt. Memories flashed back and you realized that Minho had always been there, even subtly, but he always supported your happiness and well being. He didn't care that he wasn't in a relationship with you. He loved you so much that he didn't even mind that he wasn't the one who kissed you at night, so long as you were happy. The one who had truly cared about you was right there beside you and you never even noticed.
He hesitatingly reached forward to wipe away your drying tears but instead you crashed into him with a hug, "I-I'm s-sorry! I'm so sorry M-minnie!" you cried.
Minho's eyes went wide and he felt heat rise to his cheeks before he embraced you back, "You? Sorry? You're such a shank, you don't need to shucking apologize for anything."
"No!" you cried, looking up at him desperately, "I've been so blinded by Newt that I didn't even notice how much you've truly cared about me."
He let out a small chuckle, "Can't be helped, he's a pretty boy slinthead. I'd be smitten too."
You let out a laugh in between your shaky breaths. Minho could always get you to laugh, even during the toughest times like right now and he smiled down at you, happy to finally hear your laugh again.
"But hey, now that, well you know that I shucking like you, uh, I hope things don't get all klunky between us? Like, I shucking mean it that I'm not looking to date you now that I've confessed. I don't blame you if you date Teresa now even if she's a shank since boys have probably scarred your life."
You let out a chuckle as you wiped your tears away and pulled from his embrace. "Not all boys." you said honestly and looked up at him.
"O-oh!" Minho exclaims, a visible blush on your cheeks and he grinned so wide he covered his mouth, trying to hide it. "Y/N! You slinthead, don't laugh at me when you make my heart beat faster!"
You just laughed harder but then you calmed yourself and looked at him sincerely, "Minnie, I- I'm just not ready. You are my best friend and it would be such an honor to be with someone who cares for me no matter what, but I don't want to only half be there for you. That slinthead Newt's still in my head even when I try to push him away. I want to love you like you love me. You deserve that much."
Minho smiled at you softly, "Don't worry. I'm not going anywhere. Not even if you shucking threw me in the Maze overnight, I'm gonna run back to you like that little piece of klunk you can never get rid of."
You chuckled again and smiled, "Thank you. Thank you for everything, Minnie. Always. I don't even deserve it."
He took your hand, "You do. You always have and always will and no matter what, I'm going to shucking be by your side." He smiled softly at you and you smiled back.
He slowly let go of your hand, "So, uh, well shuck, it's getting late so uh, you go get some sleep, alright, Y/N? Good night." he said and started walking away after you nodded at him.
"Good night, Minnie." you say before he gets too far away.
"Sweet dreams, you shank!" he calls, turning to you as he walked backwards then sent a small wave and headed into his own hut.
As you closed the door, something so unfamiliar reached your lips: a genuine smile.
