I could see the doors, it wasn't far now. The deafening grinding of giant gears fell short, all I could hear was the heavy pounding of blood in my ears. My legs were burning, but I pushed through the pain, tears spilling involuntarily from my eyes.
We weren't going to make it.
Minho grabbed my hand, feebly trying to pull us faster. I held him tight, squeezing his hand so hard I thought it might break.
I kept my eyes ahead, focusing on the the frantic shouts of the other gladers. Alby was waving his arms and yelling inaudible words, Chuck was in tears, his tiny fists clenched at his sides, and Newt... my eyes met his and my heart shattered in my chest. He wasn't crying, or yelling, just fighting against Gally, who was trying his best to restrain him from running into the maze.
We were so close now. I forced myself to go faster, sending my legs into overdrive; I grasped Minho's hand tighter.
We could make it. We could do it. I closed my eyes, and threw myself forward.
I expected to feel the crushing of my bones between stone walls; but instead I hit soft grass, rolling into the glade.
Yells and cheers exploded around me, and rough hands pulled me from the floor, patting my back and grabbing my shoulders. I frantically searched around the rabble, 'Minho!' I yelled panicking. Had he made it too? Had we both been quick enough?
I saw him, panting, drenched in sweat, and a grin plastered across his face. 'We made it you shank,' he laughed, pulling me into a tight embrace. I hugged him, sighing with relief. We had actually done it. We were alive, and we were okay.
The crowd around us dispersed slowly, and the noise died down until eventually I was left alone by the doors. I had finally regained a steady heartbeat, and I felt like I could breathe again. My lungs welcomed the cold crisp air of the glade, and I took a moment to admire my surroundings.
The glade was mild, and the air was filled with a warm evening glow; in that moment, I actually appreciated being within the walls of the maze, safe.
Suddenly my blissful silence was shattered by an angry voice.
'What the hell were you thinking?' Newt shouted, pacing towards me. 'You were shucking stupid, the doors nearly closed on you!'
'Newt what the hell? I made it okay? Calm down.' I reached out to touch his arm, but he pulled away from me, swatting my hand away. His chest was heaving up and down, and his eyes were glazed over.
'Calm down?' he yelled, 'don't tell me to calm down when you nearly died!'

I stepped backwards, tears threatening to spill down my face; his eyes softened slightly, but he remained stone faced. 'I know you don't care what happens to you.' he scoffed, throwing his arms wide. I was the angry one now; I furrowed my brows and my stance hardened. He stepped away from me,
'I know you don't' he continued, 'but if you die, I will literally go out of my freaking mind!' he shouted.
His shoulders slumped, defeated, his anger fading away. He retreated further, bowing his head. 'I can't lose you.' he whispered.
I gasped slightly, but he began to walk away, turning his back on me. I stood there, shocked, glued to the ground. My mind was running, trying to process what I'd heard
'Newt!' I cried, the word bursting from my lips. I ran after him, and before I knew what I was doing, I crashed into his arms, and planted my lips firmly on his.

He was shocked at first, and then he started to kiss back. His hands found my face, pulling it against his. His lips moved with mine and my head was a hot fuzz.
He pulled away, and rested his forehead on my own, breathing heavily.

'I'm in love with you, you dumb shank, don't you know that?' he whispered. 'I can't live without you.'
