Taylor flipped her phone over and over in her hand. It had been two days since she saw Karlie and the singer had never wanted to just talk on the phone to the model more than she did today. It felt a little like it had in the first months of their break up. Taylor had reached for her phone countless times, on sunny mornings, on late nights, when she was alone in her apartment, or when she was at a party with crowds of people and all she wanted was Karlie by her side. In those moments she flipped her phone over in her hand, the same way she was doing now. She had desperately wanted to call Karlie or just text her and tell her 'I wanted to call you tonight' just so Karlie knew the model was still on Taylor's mind and she wasn't quite over everything. But, after dozens of flips in her hand, the urge faded or Taylor was distracted and the call button was never pressed. Throughout the breakup Taylor knew calling wouldn't be right first because of how they left things but also because a 'hello' also meant a 'goodbye' and that just wasn't something Taylor felt she could handle, at least until she was forced to say it two nights ago. Although Karlie had mentioned she had a girlfriend Taylor still felt a glimpse of hope when the model said she would think about them meeting up to just talk. It may have been very little, nothing in fact, but it was enough to make Taylor spin the phone in her hand with a feeling of hope she hadn't had before. She just needed one more shot. One more chance. She wasn't quite sure how she was going to do it but she was going to win Karlie back. They had made a mess before, and maybe they were better apart, but there wasn't a night Taylor didn't want to sleep next to the model and in the end, that's what marriage was; wanting to sleep next to your best friend and partner every night no matter how bad things got. Taylor wanted to try again. She needed to.
Taylor made one last spin of the phone in her hands and pressed the call button.
It rang once, twice, then five times and it went to an automated message machine.
The singer hung up and threw her phone onto the bed in front of her. In all the scenarios that she had played out she never thought that Karlie would just not pick up. She had pictured them fighting and yelling and crying and making up, even phone sex, but never some computer voice on the other end. It took her off guard. Should she call again tomorrow? Does she send a text? Should she just wait it out and hope Karlie saw the missed call? Taylor was just about to reach for her phone and call up Selena for advice when a text came in from Karlie.
'Sorry I missed your call. How are you?'
It was very formal and not really an explanation of why Karlie couldn't call back but Taylor would take what she could.
'I'm good thanks! I was wondering if you still wanted to get coffee this week?'
The response felt like it took forever when in reality it took about 10 minutes.
'I don't know if going out in public is the best thing for us.'
Karlie was right. Meeting would be stressful and uncertain enough, they didn't need to add the chaotic factor of the public into it. Taylor was determined though.
'Maybe we can meet in private?'
The next text from Karlie took much longer than 10 minutes, so much so that Taylor checked her message had sent through properly about 4 times. Finally, she got a response.
'Would you like to come over tomorrow around 5?'
Taylor's heart jumped and she couldn't stop the smile spreading across her face although she attempted to play it, somewhat cool.
