Chapter 19: Painful Surprise

I can't believe that just happened! I mean I didn't think Nick would want to go there. I'm kind of glad we aren't mates though. I hardly know him, well I take that back but still.

"Liiiiz. Liz? Liz!!!!" Someone yelled in my ear.

"Ah! What!" I said.

"Geez. It was like you weren't here. You totally spaced out on me." Kate said, fake hurt.

"Sorry, lost in thought I guess." I shrugged.

"Anyway, do you think you could do me a favor?"

"Sure... what is it?" I asked, unsure.

"Girls? We are going to bed, alright? Goodnight!" Mom yelled.

"Night!" We both called back.

"So I was thinking that maybe you could come outside with me and I could ride on your back?" Kate asked.

"What? Haha. Yeah right, Kate. Come on, what is it?"

When she didn't reply back, I knew she was serious just by the look on her face.

I sighed. "Yeah why not. You just have to hold on really tight ok? I don't want you to fall off."

"Yes!" Kate fist pumped the air.

I giggled. We walked outside and went into the woods. "Ready?" I asked.

Kate nodded. I shifted into my massive black wolf and crouched down enough to let her climb on. She eagerly hopped on and I slowly got up, making sure not to make her fall.

I ran at a slower pace so I knew that she'd be safe. I stopped once we were at the field that the deer herd were always at. I knelt down and Kate got off.

Quickly, I shifted and for once, I'm glad I mastered the skill to shift back with clothes on.

"So..." I trailed off. "Why did you want to go for a run on my back?" I asked curious.

"Well, I thought it was awesome! But anyway, I wanted to tell you something."

"Alright. What is it?"

"Umm... well, I might have told Nick what you are, and surprisingly he took it rather well." Kate said quietly.

"Oh my god! I swear Kate, if I didn't know Nick was a shifter like me, I would have sooooo killed you!" I shouted.

"Sorry." she whispered.

"Whatever I'm tried. Lets go back home." I sighed frustrated.

"Nicholas!" I screeched. I could feel the freezing cold pond water dripping down my back.

Right now, Nick and I were patrolling my territory and we were taking a five minute break and look what happened!

I can't believe he's trying to hind from us. I said to my wolf, Fawn.

I think he underestimates us sometimes. Fawn's soft yet powerful voice sounded in my head.

I sighed mentally and started walking around, pretending not to know where Nick was when I really did. All of the sudden I heard someone's foot stepped on a tree branch. I also heard harsh ragged breaths, like someone was in pain.

Nick, get over here now. I heard someone walking out here. I said through the link I had with him.

In a few seconds, Nick was at my side.

I nodded and we both shifted. I stalked closer to the source of the sound with Nick on my right.

Once I could see it, I noticed it was a male human, but it wasn't just any human. It was my best friend. Michael Anderson. I caught sight of what he was doing out here and I knew instantly that he was one of us. My best friend was going threw the most pain process in the world. The first shift.
