Jay did not move. His feelings were all over the place. He didn't know whether he should be happy or mad; glad I was safe or angry for making everyone worry, and of course underneath it all I felt his love for me. I gave him a small, weak, hesitant smile which was enough to snap him out of it.
"What are you doing here?" he asked, as he removed the girl's arms from his body. His voice was so harsh it made me jump a little.
I opened my mouth to answer but my voice caught in my throat, so I closed my mouth and shrugged. I kept my eyes locked on him and his were on me. We stood there like this for a while that I felt the girl behind him start to get really annoyed and impatient, but it didn't matter.
"Riley," Jay said softly, as I saw his tension leave and felt his anger start to disappear and his love for me shine through.
"Riley? Who's Riley?" The girl snapped, pulling his attention back.
"Oh Hannah, sorry. She is a friend from my old town," He said finally, taking his eyes from mine and turning to face her.
"Why is she here?" she asked softly now that he was focused in her again.
"Give me a minute." He answered and turned his back on her to shorten the space between us.
"So it's Mr. Jeremy now?" I smiled, trying to ease the tension that had now entered the room again.
He smiled back, "Mrs. P was my parents' idea, not mine."
"Oh." I said, as I felt the tear build up in my eyes. I hadn't realized how much I had missed Jay, or how hard it was going to be to leave once I had the information I needed.
"Why are you here?" Jay asked, finally catching my eyes again. I shrugged because I didn't trust my voice at the moment. He looked at me and it was as if our old friendship was finally clicking back in place. "Ri," he whispered, closing the gap between us and wrapping his arms around me. "Whatever it is, it's going to be okay." I rested my forehead on his shoulder as I felt a hot tear run down my cheek. "It's gonna be okay," he whispered again and reassuringly stroked my head.
"I'm not so sure," I finally whispered back.
A cough from behind pulled us apart. Jay glanced behind him at Hannah and then back at me, unsure of what he should do next. I wipe the tears from my face and Jay sighed, "I'll be right back."
I waited as he walked back to her and said something that I couldn't hear. I lifted my eyes from the floor and saw that Hannah was really beautiful. She was standing there in a pair of short shorts and a bikini top with her hands crossed over her chest. Her skin was slightly red, and her hair lightened by spending too much time in the sun. Her deep green eyes quickly snapped in my direction and I let my blue eyes fall back to the floor as my brown hair fell in my face.
"Seriously!" she snapped. "You want me to leave for her!"
Jay glanced back at me then turned to face Hannah again saying something in a hushed voice.
"I don't care who she is! I'm your girlfriend!" she yelled, and then stormed out of the room.
Jay turned back to me and I felt how bad he felt about what just happened. "Go up the stairs and take a right. The second door on your left is my room. I'll meet you up there in a few minutes." He said trying to spare me from whatever scene was about to play out.
"Jay, I-" I started. Jay put his hand up to stop me and shook his head before he turned and went after Hannah.
When Jay finally joined me upstairs he sighed. "Sorry about that," Jay apologized.
"Jay, don't be. I should have called; I didn't know you were on a date. I shouldn't have just showed up."
"Ri," he said, cutting me off. "It's not a big deal."
"It seemed like it was a big deal to her." I mumbled. Jay shrugged and I felt how awful he felt for me having seen him with some other girl. He almost felt as if he was cheating on me.
After a long pause Jay sighed again and asked, "What are you doing here, Ri?" what's going on? You know how worried sick your parents are, not to mention your friends?"
I shrugged. I knew all these questions were coming but I didn't know how to answer them.
"Darn it, Riley! Would you just talk to me! You came here for a reason what the heck is going on!?"
I let my eyes fall to the floor. "I'm looking for Evan," I whispered.
Jay gave a short laugh, "you're kidding me, right?" I lifted my eyes from the floor and looked at him. He sighed, "You're not kidding." He took a seat in his chair by his desk. "Why would you want to find him? He tried to kill you, Riley."
A couple weeks before I left I was attacked and possible could have died if it had not been for Sam who I believed stepped in and stopped whoever was trying to hurt me. Everyone thinks it was Evan, and there is a lot of evidence that points to him. While my memory of the night is hazy because of the drugs that I had been forced to take, I knew it wasn't Evan.
"It wasn't him, Jay." I said softly.
"Yeah, I heard." He rolled his eyes. "The case was dropped. Not enough sufficient evidence. Especially since the victim doesn't believe it was him."
"Jay, please," I started.
"No, Ri," he interrupted. "No one has heard from you for weeks and you show up here." he stood up and started to pace the floor. "I'm thinking your finally going to open up to someone and stop running!"
"I'm not running" I interjected as I stood up. However he continued on as if I said nothing.
"But instead you are here because you are on a wild goose chase after the guy who attacked you!"
"It wasn't him!" I yelled.
"Then who was it!?" he yelled back at me as he stopped pacing.
"I'm not sure," I said as my eyes fell to the floor
"So nothing's changed" he threw his hands in the air. "You still won't talk to me. You are still keeping things from me." Then he turned and headed to the door.
"Where are you going?" I asked.
"To call your parents." He informed me, as he stopped walking but kept his back to me. "To tell them where you are." Then he walked out the door.
