The {Im}perfection Dare : Day 1
Café, greasy spoon, bistro, coffee shop. Whatever you wanted to call it, I had read enough teen novels to know that these were meant to be the places in which the protagonist finds her long lost soul-mate and fall helplessly in love with on another, whilst feeling sparks, fireworks and all other types of explosions when looking into each others eyes.
Personally, I took my hat off to those people. After enduring such an ordeal it must have taken everything in their power not to spontaneously combust. Arguably they may walk away a little crossed eyed and confused, but that seemed to be a small price to pay for what could have possibly been game over.
Honestly, they had my respect, as I found walking in a straight line on normal days a challenge and a half to say the least. However unlike the doe eyed love birds I had often read in books,. I found myself in the 'Hole in the wall coffee shop', because typical to the good ol' English weather, it was literally chucking it down. Hailing cats, dogs and every other four legged house pet known to man.
Sighing to myself, I retracted my gaze from the plummeting raindrops above as the splashed against the window pane before racing to the bottom. In search of some kind of warmth I seated myself down in one of the booths closest to the open hearth. Who would have thought that only a week ago the sun had been blazing, scoring anyone who dared to even set foot outside.
That was English summer for you, weather as indecisive as a child in a toy shop.
Knowing full well the rain was not about to stop any time soon, I lowered my head onto the table, stripping myself of my dripping anorak, placing it beside me. Letting my eyes droop to the sound of the rain, the shuffling of feet, tinkling of the doorbell and constant upkeep of chatter didn’t do much to stop my tiring body to react the only way I knew best. Sleep.
I didn't know how long I had been left to my own devices in the booth, but before I could rouse myself of my own accord a chilled hand encircled mine, chilling me to the bone. I an instant my eyes had snapped open.
I knew that feel, that touch that chill. It was a feeling that had stayed with me all that time since a similar incident in history class. The guy I had sat next to had always a reputation of the silent but deadly type. Me being me I had decided to befriend him. Of course like every other clichéd story out there our first encounter hadn't gone to plan.
Honestly, I had actually walked away with an eerie feeling in the pit of my stomach and had decided not to pursue the friendship that seemed to leave me with and uneasy feeling. After asking around I found out he was typically misunderstood, kept well to himself and only spoke when completely necessary.
More than anything I came to believe that the paleness of his skin and the lazy eye condition only added to his somewhat quiet demeanour that made most people want to back off. It was weird really he wasn't a complete outcast but he never belong to group of friends, kind of like the school vagabond. You never knew who would be graced with his presence yet. For me the time came that day in History class. Stuck on a question I had asked aloud for help from those on my table.
Due to the amount of conversation that swamped our table I wasn't all the shocked when I was ignored like a duck on water.
That was until a chilling hand encircled mine, sending a shiver from the tips of my fingers to the base of my spine. Not the 'good' type of chills that people explained when they first encountered the love of their life, but chills the left a trail of goosebumps behind, making your hair stand on end and you wanting nothing more than to rub your hand furiously up your arm to get rid of the chill that seemed indent itself in your skin no matter how hard you tried or how many layers to seemed to obtain.
The same chill I had waited years to forget, was the same chill that encircled my hand slowly.
