The Urge by Dan Howellsummary: Phil's a vampire who wants to feel alive and Dan's a human who wants to be dead.
"Do it."
Phil was sweating, fangs baring and his grip tight on the boy in front of him. The stranger was pinned to the wall, not even phased at the fact that Phil was a vampire. He looked deader than him. His brown eyes were glossed over with tears, bags underneath them and messy hair.
"Do it already. Kill me," he repeated through gritted teeth, staying against the wall. "I don't care anymore."
Phil could hear his blood pulsing, the stranger's heart beating, feel the sweat trickling down his neck that he so badly wanted to sink his teeth into. His own mouth ached, pants tumbling out to ease the pain.
He leaned in, grazing his fangs over the side of the boy's throat, then-
-he dropped him. Phil backed away, letting out a sob and covered his mouth.
"I can't do it," Phil cried, dropping to his knees. "Leave. Leave before I hurt you, or worse."
"I'm not afraid of you," the stranger whispered.
"I could fucking kill you!" Phil screamed.
"Could," the brunette responded. "But you won't."
"What's your name?" Phil snarled.
"Dan."
"I'm Phil."
-
He had let Dan go, which was stupid because Dan was sad as it was. Dan was going to die, at Phil's hands or his own.
Phil was back at the same alley he nearly killed Dan at, hands in his pockets. He was no longer hungry, he had finally stolen hospital blood rather than killing humans in cold blood. He wanted to apologize but Dan wasn't there, not even his breathing was heard from miles away. Wait.
His breathing.
Why couldn't Phil hear that?
He froze up, remembering what Dan had said that night. "I don't care anymore." The way Dan had gotten too close to Phil, as if he wanted to be killed. The way he didn't fight back.
Phil tried to remember his scent and caught onto it, tracking it and running after hearing his slow heartbeat. He was a blur, quite literally, rushing to find this stranger who for some reason Phil cared about deeply without even knowing his last name. He shut his eyes and when he opened them, he found himself stood in front of a small apartment.
Dan must live here, Phil thought to himself before following his cologne to a dorm. He knocked before deciding fuck it and kicked it down, noticing now had much slower his heartbeat had gotten.
"Dan?"
No response, only silence. Too much silence. He rushed around the dorm, finally stopping at the bathroom door. It was cracked open, enough for Phil to peek through. He could hear the slightest of water swishing, indicating someone in was in the bath.
"Dan? I'm coming in. . ." Phil spoke before pushing open the door, closing his eyes to be respectful, however Dan didn't start yelling at him to get out or blush and cover himself, and finally Phil peeked one eye open before both of them widened. "Dan!"
The boy in the bathtub was practically blue, his head underwater, the rest of his body covered by bubbles.
"Dan, what the hell were you thinking?" Phil cried out, dropping to his knees to pull Dan's head out from under the water and drag him out of the bathtub, snatching a nearby towel to wrap him up in. Phil then set Dan on the bathroom floor, leaning over him and beginning to do CPR on the unconscious teenager.
Phil could still hear his heartbeat, Dan was still alive, but he wouldn't be for much longer if Phil didn't hurry up. He pushed at his bare chest harshly, trying to warm him up with the towel at the same time as his skin was cold as ice. Phil was close to just forcing his own blood down Dan's throat when Dan suddenly coughed, jolting up and hacking out water.
Phil simply sat there until Dan was done, in shock. Dan breathed in, looking up at the vampire through his hooded eyes.
"Why did you do that?" Dan asked softly, his voice hoarse from choking so violently.
"I could ask you the same thing," Phil shot back, furrowing his eyebrows at Dan. "But I won't, because that's personal and I don't know you. I do know that you deserve happiness and love and that you shouldn't hurt yourself because a lot of people will be sad, including me."
"But I'd be happy. I'd be free of my sadness."
"However you'd only pass it on to those around you."
Dan's eyes began to water and Phil watched intently as a tear slipped down his dimpled cheeks, across those pretty freckles that Phil wanted to make constellations out of. Dan hugged the towel closer to himself, still shivering, before he spoke up again.
"Can I hug you?" Dan questioned quietly, tears dripping from his cheeks to his bare knees. Phil gulped, the eye contact between them feeling like a stretched rubber band, and if they looked away, it'd snap and make contact. Phil didn't dare say anything, only nodded, and that was all Dan needed because he was throwing himself at the undead boy and sobbing onto his shoulder, his towel loosely covering his torso.
Phil tensed, feeling Dan's tears begin to stain through his shirt, and he looked down, not realizing until now how his hands were hovering over Dan's bare back, scared to touch such a fragile human. He was scared that if he even poked him, he'd crumple and blow away like dust. But then Dan squeezed him tighter and Phil gave up, mentally raising the white flag as he wrapped his arms around Dan's bare back and held him.
Phil could feel his blood pulsing through his veins, hear it, although his fangs didn't appear nor did his eyes turn red. He didn't want to hurt Dan, he didn't need to, because the boy had hurt himself enough already.
-
After that incident, Phil came over every night. He never necessarily stayed the night, he'd even travel miles just to be there for a minute so he'd know Dan was alive. Phil slowly began to learn how to control himself around Dan, he would drink before visiting him, however Dan wasn't making it easy. And it wasn't the fangs being revealed that he was talking about.
Dan was constantly getting very touchy, whether that was sitting too close to Phil on the couch or random thigh brushes when eating together. And finally one night Phil had snapped, grabbing Dan by the wrist and having him pinned against the kitchen wall in a blur.
It took only a few seconds of eye contact, that physical consent being passed between the two boys before Phil had his lips on Dan's. He was cautious of using tongue or opening his mouth too wide, scared that his fangs would nick Dan and make him bleed and it would just not end well. But that's exactly what Dan wanted, because he was parting his mouth and their tongues clashed and Dan was panting into his mouth and Phil had him up against the wall with Dan's legs around Phil's waist.
"I might accidentally bite you," Phil hissed against Dan's lips.
"It doesn't have to be on accident," Dan moaned out.
"Dan, I'm terrified of hurting you," Phil said sternly, pulling away to look at Dan. "You're such a gorgeous little thing, I never wanted to hurt you- not even when I had you against the wall in that alley. I've always wanted to protect you, and I always will."
"Kiss me on the mouth and set me free, then," Dan whispered. "Just please don't bite."
