CHAPTER 24
Sam's POV/Castiel's POV
Sam's POV
Dean and Juniper came bursting into the bunker just ahead of me, both making comments about how happy they were to be back. We'd just returned from a hunt up in Iowa, a simple salt-and-burn that was actually pretty simple for once.
It had been a great gift to accompany the new year. The past several hunts we'd gone on had ended with one of us seriously injured, but with the case we'd just finished, all we had to add to our belts was another successful hunt.
We had gone out into the graveyard where the ghost's corpse was buried - because for once, they hadn't been cremated - and spent a long while searching and digging. People in the area around us were shooting off fireworks in a new year's celebration, and I glanced at the time on my phone. 11:57.
As Juniper lit a match and got ready to toss it into the grave, the spirit of the woman appeared with a roar of anger. Juniper had chucked the match into the grave, and the ghost burst into flames as the clocks changed from 11:59 to 12:00.
The moments after the ghost was gone were filled with a certain silence that came from the ghost's death and the opportune timing for a short pause of the fireworks, but seconds afterwards the town erupted in excitement and more fireworks were shot into the air.
Dean let out a chuckle. "Happy New Year, guys." He'd muttered.
But while I was happy about the simple case and the prospects of a new year that January was bringing, my constant search for answers about Dean and Juniper's prophecy was bringing me down.
I had searched so many corners of the internet and the countless books in the bunker, to the point that Dean and Juniper were starting to get suspicious.
It started with my choice in books, so I had to be careful about when I read certain books in the library. Juniper enjoyed reading almost as much as I did, so whenever she caught me with a book, she wanted to ask about it to see if it was a book she'd like to read as well. That left me confined to my room most of the time when I consulted books for information.
When it came to searching the internet, quickly closing my webpage every time Dean or Juniper came into the room wasn't necessarily discrete.
That was why, as Dean and Juniper strolled into the bunker and dropped their bags, I tried to prove that nothing was wrong without over compensating.
"Hey," I started. "You guys want to go do something?"
"Like what?" Juniper asked.
I shrugged as she and my brother looked back at me. "I don't know, go to a bar or something?"
Dean pursed his lips, a thoughtful look on his face, but Juniper looked like she wasn't on board. "I kinda want to take a shower, actually." She muttered. "I'm all for a few beers, but maybe here?"
"Why do you want to go party all of the sudden?" Dean asked me.
"I don't want to party, I just thought... I don't know, we didn't really get to celebrate New Year's..."
"Sure we did, we ganked a ghost. I'd say that's a great celebration."
Juniper sat down in a chair in the library for a moment. "Well, I wouldn't mind hustling a little pool. Dean, we could ruin somebody's day by hustling them out of a few hundred bucks!"
Dean nodded a little, and I smirked. If anything could convince them to leave the bunker, it was the idea of ruining somebody's day.
"Alright, yeah, let's do it." Dean finally caved.
