CHAPTER 5

Juniper's POV

I felt something soft smack my shoulder, and instinctively reached for pistol I kept under the pillow.

"Juniper, get up! We should get back on the road!" Jade's voice ran out, bright and cheery.

My tight grip on my pistol loosened. For a moment, I had forgotten that I was not currently flying solo.

With a groan I rolled over onto my back, staring at the ceiling. "What time is it?" I asked groggily.

"5 o'clock." Jade said plainly.

I had finally gotten a good nights sleep, and Jade was waking me up at 5 o'clock in the freaking morning. I sighed, knowing I wouldn't get back to sleep now, and sat up in bed.

"Morning, ray of sunshine." Jade said, sending a smirk my way. My response was a scowl.

Jade was already dressed and set to get back out on the road, while I was only in shorts and a tank top. I stood up and grabbed some clothes from my duffel bag, heading to the bathroom to change.

I came back out in black skinny jeans, a dark gray T-shirt, a blue jean shirt, and my leather jacket. I slid on a pair of socks and my boots, and I was ready to go as well.

"Aren't you going to eat?" Jade asked.

"We'll stop and I'll get a burger on the way out of town." I answered, grabbing my bag and carefully putting my laptop inside.

Last night I had found another case. Jade and I had left Manhattan the day after I gave in to her wishes of coming with me. Now, three days later, I was begging internally for a case to come along. I needed to work.

"A burger for breakfast?" Jade questioned, grabbing her bag as well.

"I've done it before and I'll do it again." I said, heading for the door of the hotel room. "Go check us out, I'll put our bags in the car."

Jade tossed me her bag, and I carried them out the front of the hotel. Once I had put them in the backseat, I pulled out my keys and unlocked the car door.

The familiar creak of the hinges as I opened and shut my door was comforting, and so was the sound of the purring engine as I stuck my keys in the ignition and started my car. Everything about this car was comforting and welcoming to me. Nine years had dragged this car around with me, crisscrossing the country. Our blemishes were the same blemishes, and the blemishes on this car made it perfect for me.

I smiled, rubbing the steering wheel with my hands, feeling its old material brush against my fingertips, but my thoughts were interrupted as Jade opened the door on her side and hopped in.

"God, this car is so old. When are you going to get a new one? Get a car that you can put CD's in, not cassette tapes."

I stared at her for a long moment, my jaw clenched, before pulling out of the parking lot. And, just to be a bitch, turned up my music until it was obnoxiously loud. Jade was clearly annoyed, which was good enough for me.

We went through the drive through of some fast food restaurant, I turned my music back down to order food. I got myself a burger and soda, big surprise, and Jade got tea.

"I can't believe you're eating a burger this early." Jade mumbled as we got back to the road.

"Get over it." I mumbled back. "And grab my map from the back seat."

Jade had taken the place of my map and phone, and now I had to get used to the change. I was used to being alone, and my sister's presence left me constantly on edge. She constantly got on my nerves and screwed with my schedule.
