'You OK?' He asks like nothing happened. I shake my head, his eyes immediately spark with worry. I can't see it for long, he picks up his hat and as soon as he puts it on his eyes are hidden... Again...
'Fever.' I say quietly. 'Probably for a few days now.'
He nods. Should I apologize? I want to, yet I wouldn't know what to say. Can I apologize at all?
'Idiot.' He whispers quietly. 'Why didn't you tell us?'
Shocked I look at him. He has turned his back at me, standing with his arms crossed. There's anger in his voice, I can feel it.
But that's not all.
'You... you were worried?' I ask in disbelieve. He doesn't answer, but he won't have to. I smile.
'Thank you.'
When he turns back his moving's unlike usual. Not as graceful, not as fluid.
'What?'
'Thanks, for worrying.'
'Ah... You're welcome.'
As I look around I notice that there is no fire. It appears they either moved me, didn't eat, or are here for only a short while.
'Didn't you guys eat?'
Ritsu nods at me. Before I can ask anything he tells me what I wanted to hear.
'One and a half day. To the lake.'
I nod. I've been asleep for one and a half day, and the others went to the lake.
One and a half day... So now I'm missing at least three days in the past month... New record...
Though it's nothing like before that, anyway...
'Wait... They went BACK!' He nods. Apparently I'm the only one that thinks that that is just plain crazy to do.
'But what...' He looks at me and grins. I sigh. 'Let me quess... It's day-dormant.'
He nods.
Sighing deeply I sit down. 'What a pain... Guess I shouldn't worry.'
I haven't said it and a loud bass cry fills the morning air of the labyrinth. Immediately a sharp pain runs from the tip of my fingers along my arm.
'Kuso.' Is all I manage to bring out.
When Rinka comes rushing through the hallway with a limping Bakaito trailed by a furious looking Usagi it's kinda obvious.
'Why the FUDGE did you do THAT!'
Bakaito simply shrugs, gritting his teeth. But the closer he gets, the worse the pain in my arm gets.
'Kuso...' I growl agonized. 'His arm.'
Ritsu notices I'm in pain, and looks at me. His hat still hides his eyes, but I'm sure they're clouded with worry.
'Usa, it's his arm...' I say quetly. She nod at me and starts updating us on the situation.
'It's some kind of poison.' She breathes out rumbling through her medical bag. 'Put him down.' She commands shortly after. No one protests.
As she's making various potions I notice she's actually very worried. I turn to Rinka.
'What happened?' I ask, she faces me and I can see the worry in her eyes.
'He found this bag, a few steps away from the lake. I told him not to get it! I told him!'
'But he did, then what next?' I cut her off.
'Bugs.' Bakaito sighs out, still gritting his teeth. 'Stupid bugs...'
Usagi has started handing the barely conscious half-dog different potions. He's slipping in and out of wake. For me that means the pain in my arm gets lesser. But for him it's not good.
We might just have a problem.
'It seems he was bitten by some kind of beetle, a poisonous one.' Usagi says. Then the worry takes a peak. With a trembling voice she continues.
'One I'm not familiar with, and can't make an antidote for.'
'We can't bring him back in time either.' Ritsu says quietly.
And that means:
'We're in trouble...'
This is not right. It shouldn't be like this. It's Bakaito for kami's sake! Our dense, sleepy, funny, jolly Bakaito!
It cannot end this way.
'It's not the right way...' I whisper, the first tears slipping past my bravery.
No one notices.
'This is not the right way.'
And then I know. I know just what bit him and just what is going to help. And I know where to find it.
Slowly I rise to my feet. No one stops me. Everyone notices.
Then I start running. Tears streaming down my face.
I'm looking for a color.
That's all I know when I turn down the corners of the first floor. I hear someone calling out vaguely in the background. Too far behind.
Corner after corner, faster, I need to be faster. Where did I leave it? Left, corner, dead ahead, to the right.
I'm pretty sure I passed some soldiers by now. I'm in a territory I'm not allowed to go.
Not that I even care to wonder what they'll report. Nor does the map concern me.
That's it. Dead ahead, on the right. Flowers mark the entrance.
I'm looking for the red flowers.
I skip when I find a wall plastered with a huge plant bearing red flowers. At first glance you won't notice, but when I focus it's clear the flowers grow in an opening in the wall.
A passage marked by red flowers, then behind it...
Nectar.
