You and Grayson have been dating for the past 5 years. You met each other at the beach when you were both 19. You and your friend were playing volleyball when Grayson and Ethan walked up asking if they could play. You teamed up with Grayson and your friend teamed up with Ethan. Grayson asked for your number later that day and the rest was history.

Now you're both 24 and lately you've been feeling ignored by Grayson. He hasn't been spending much time with you and when you do spend time together, he acts weird and is constantly checking his phone. You've just been ignoring it but it's getting the best of you. You can't enjoy yourself anymore when you're with him and when you're not with him, you constantly thinking about why he's ignoring you.

You walked into your's and Grayson's shared apartment to find Grayson on his phone. You rolled your eyes and walked into the kitchen. "Hey Y/N," he said and walked towards you.

"Hey," you said quietly.

"I have something planned for us tonight. Go get changed into something nice," he said with an excited look on his face.

You force yourself to go get changed. You knew what tonight was going to be like: another night with you talking the whole time whilst Grayson is on his phone. You put on a sun dress and walk back to the kitchen. Grayson was checking his phone, as usual. You cleared your throat to get his attention. He quickly put his phone down and smiled when he saw you. "You look beautiful," he said.

"Thanks," you said quietly.

You both walked out of the apartment and into his car. "Where are we going?" you asked.

"It's a surprise," he said with a wink.

You smiled for the first time in a long time. You were happy that Grayson had planned this night for you and him but you can't help but think about him constantly checking his phone. Why does he keep doing that? And why is he never home?

You arrive at the beach where you and Grayson first met. You guys rarely come here since it's quick a drive away from your apartment and there's a closer beach.

"Why are we here?" You asked confused.

"It's a surprise. Now come, I packed dinner," Grayson said whilst getting out for the car.

You get out and walk onto the beach. Grayson laid down a blanket and unpacked the basket full of food. Dinner was nice besides Grayson checking his phone every time you looked away. You tried not to let it bother you but it was really getting on your nerves. "Let's go for a walk on the boardwalk," he said, putting down his phone.

You walked hand-in-hand down the boardwalk and watched the sunset. "Wow, it's so beautiful at this time of day," you said looking at the sunset. You had never been to this beach at night.

Grayson didn't say anything and you looked over to see him on his phone. "Grayson! Why the hell do you keep checking your phone? Every time we hang out, you are always on your phone! I've tried to let it slide but I can't take it anymore! What is so important that you can't spend a couple hours without your phone? Am I not good enough for you? Am I boring you?" You yelled.

Grayson looked shocked and put his phone away. "Y/N-" he started.

"No! Don't 'Y/N' me! You have been completely ignoring me for the past few months! You're never home and when you are home, you're glued to your phone! I've had it, Grayson."

You started walking away but Grayson grabbed your wrist. "Y/N, listen to me, please," he pleaded with tears in his eyes. You kept walking and then stopped when you reached the edge of the boardwalk. You looked at the sunset and then down at the beach. You immediately covered your mouth as tears reached your eyes. In the sand were the words "Y/N, marry me?" You looked over at Grayson who was right behind you. Before you could say something, he spoke.

"Y/N, I'm sorry for not being there for you and I'm sorry I'm always on my phone. It's just- I've been planning this date for the past few months. I'm never home because I'm with people, working on this date and when I'm at home, I'm texting them to make sure everything is going smoothly. I wanted to make this night really special but I got so worked up in the planning that I didn't realize what it was doing to you," he said, his eyes getting teary.

You started to feel guilty. You had no idea Grayson was planning this date for so long and now you just ruined it by yelling at him. Grayson took your hand and went down on one knee, pulling out a dark blue velvet box.

"Y/N, I am so, so sorry for what I've put you through the past few months and I'm sorry this isn't the proposal you've dreamed of. You're my world, Y/N, and I don't know what I would do without you. I hope, even after this disaster of a night, that you will do the honours of marrying me."

You nodded and managed to say "yes".

Grayson slid the ring onto your finger and kissed you. In that moment, the world stopped spinning, the birds stopped chirping, the waves stopped crashing, it was just you and him.

"I'm sorry for ruining your proposal," you said into his chest after you guys broke the kiss.

He laughed and patted down your hair. "You didn't ruin it. You made it more us. We're not perfect so why should our proposal be?"
