Chapter Two
Pitch Perfect
Sienna's POV -
"Are you going to take that parking spot?" I shouted out the window to Chelsea.
She shook her head and pointed in front of her.
"No, someone is pulling out, I'll take theirs." She responded loudly.
I nodded and put my car in one of the very few vacant parking spots.
We probably should have taken a cab or something... we wouldn't have to worry about a parking space. And maybe, as my taxi parked, I could have some handsome music guy like Jesse from Pitch Perfect park his car and sing...
But then I wouldn't join any acapella group anyway, my singing was terrible.
Anyway, like the idiots we were, we completely forgot about what we'd do with our cars. Now, I know there were the many parking lots and whatnot but there were like thousands of new people here today, we completely overlooked the fact that we'd need to get in early to find somewhere to park our cars.
Ally had been in front of us the entire time and found a spot quickly but it was Chelsea and I who had been driving around aimlessly, praying for someone to leave the lot.
The girls met at my car and we stood around, none us really wanting to state the obvious.
Today was our first day of college.
And no matter how nonchalant we all were, we all knew that we were nervous. Because after all, this was the very first day of college. This was the beginning of a new era. And I had been working my ass off all my life to get into Yale; it had always been a dream of mine to make it to an Ivy League school. After being accepted to both Yale and Harvard, I obviously chose the former since I knew I couldn't make it without my mum.
"Should we go now? We do have to find our dorms you know." Chelsea broke the ice after we made small talk.
After all, she had been the blunt one out of all of us.
Unlike most freshmen here today, the three of us weren't worried about our dorm room ordeal. Ally and I had grown up in Stanwell Vale but Chelsea had only come a couple of years ago. Before that, she had lived in New Haven since her father was a professor here, at Yale.
He had pulled some strings for us and we were able to get a dorm room for the three of us. I was so unbelievably grateful since I heard so many stories about freshmen who had been put with freaks in their dorm rooms.
"Yeah, you're right. Let's go." Ally muttered.
I sent a quick text to my mum and told her that I arrived. As we walked a preppy looking girl with a nametag with the name 'Jamie' approached the three of us, her smile and enthusiasm ridiculously fake.
"Hi there! You must be the newbies! Welcome to Yale University. My name is Jamie. How are you gals today?" She grinned broadly.
Ally stood and stared robotically while Chelsea and I laughed.
"We're doing well, thanks, Jamie. Where do we find which division we're in?" Chelsea asked.
She turned around and pointed to a notice board in the distance.
"You can find your name and look for your division. Once you find it, join your groups where you'll take a tour of the campus and your ID photos. From there you'll be able to go to your dorm. Classes start in two days so you guys need to settle in before you get down to business!" She continued with that same enthusiasm.
We nodded and mumbled our thanks with polite smiles as we made our way to the notice board.
"What's wrong, Ally?" Chelsea laughed. "You were complete shell shocked when she spoke."
I looked beside me to Ally and she did seem kind of pale.
"I completely forgot that this was college. Like, I'm here. It's starting. It's just all too much." She murmured, looking around like a lost puppy.
"Seriously?" I laughed. "We've gone over this so much; we've visited the campus probably more times than any freshmen here today. We'll do fine." I encouraged.
She nodded and then turned to Chelsea and me with a sheepish smirk.
"Well... and I also saw a bunch of hot guys, too." She mumbled.
We rolled our eyes at her and stood behind the crowd that were surrounding the noticeboard. We broke away from our clique to find our surnames and after much pushing, I found my name.
Sienna Dawson: Division 39-A.
I was pushed from out of the crowd by the people desperately needing to see which division they were in. I walked over to the bench the girls and I had agreed to meet at and saw they were already there, waiting for me.
"39-A?" Ally asked.
"Yep, how'd you know?" I answered, sitting on the bench next to them.
"I have the same thing." Responded Chelsea. "I think my dad had something to do with it. We better go find our leader then."
We stood up and walked towards a set of tables that had a bunch of divisions written on the front of the table. We found where it said 39-A and marked our names off.
"We'll be going on a tour of the campus after all of you get your photo ID's taken. Remember that you can't retake your photo, even if you're in the middle of sneezing. Do not lose your ID because it has your college allowance on it where you will pay for breakfast, lunch, dinner etcetera. The tour is optional so if you choose not to go on it, you can check with me where your dorm is on campus." A male shouted loudly.
He seemed like he had been announcing the same thing on a loop. I didn't think seniors were too keen on having to be leaders for us freshmen. I think they prefer they go to some frat party instead. Or something like that... this was college right?
The guy checked his watched and muttered something under his breath before looking back up at the crowd around his table.
"A couple more minutes and then our group have to leave for the ID photos. We'll be going on a tour of the campus after all of you get your photo ID's taken. Remember that you can't retake your photo, even if you're in the middle of..." And the guy continued on with his loop.
I turned to the girls who had a look of anxiety on their face. Well, Ally more than Chelsea.
"What if I have a terrible photo? I'll be the laugh of the century." Ally panicked.
"It's college, Ally, not High School. I don't think some plastic blonde will get out of her way to make sure you look stupid in your photo and then embarrass you in front of everyone." I teased.
"Hey! No blonde jokes." Chelsea scolded playfully.
She was special in our town for her coloured hair. It was extremely weird, but somehow, most of our town all had dark hair. We knew if you were an outsider if you had coloured hair.
"If anything, the plastic you should be worried about ruining your college life is Chelsea." I said playfully to Ally.
I could see Chelsea rolling her eyes and took out her phone.
"Hello?" She answered. "Hey, dad. Yeah. I knew you were up to that. We're just waiting a minute before we take our ID. No. There's no point of going on the tour, we've been here a gazillion times. Yeah, we'll just go to our cars and start unpacking. Tonight? That's ridiculous, dad. I want to settle in, we can have dinner tomorrow. Okay. Okay. Love you, too. Bye." She hung up and slid her phone back into her pocket, turning back to Ally and I.
"I told you he was the one up to it." She muttered.
I was about to say something but was interrupted by the leader guy announcing we were going to take our photo ID's.
We followed behind him, a group of about fifteen students, but everyone lingered in the back, probably anxious about taking the photo. I didn't know why everyone was so panicked, this kind of thing happened at school all the time. There people just probably didn't realise that this was different to high school in the sense that if you look terrible, Regina George won't hassle you.
Since everyone was trailing behind, we girls were at the front of the line to take our photos. Chelsea went first, the camera flashing and being transformed onto a plastic card that would hold her college allowance. I went next, standing in front of a camera that was flashing with numbers counting down. I plastered on my usual smile and the camera flashed.
I walked along the lane and watched as seniors behind tables were working hard and quick to get our photos onto plastic cards.
"Full name?" Someone asked from behind the tables who was looking at me with impatience.
"Sienna Talia Dawson." I replied quickly.
They wrote it down, turning the laptop around so I could make sure the spelling was correct.
I nodded and they proceeded with whatever and in just a few seconds, they handed me my card and explained that every month, I'd have to renew the card to add my college allowance. Yale was trying out this new thing by giving their students a college allowance of $120 a month. It was probably reasonable since it could only be spent in college. Breakfast was only $3.00 or something and lunch was around the same thing.
I didn't want to eat breakfast all the time anyway since I'd prefer to eat in the confinements of my own suite.
I waited with Chelsea at the end and waited for a nervous Ally to receive her photo. She came towards us with a grim look and held up her ID.
"Regina George is going to be the death of me!" She exclaimed, showing us looking absolutely perfect in her photo.
Ally was one of those people who were completely flawless and was oblivious to it. I've said that to her before and she always said I acted the exact same way, something that did surprise me. Because, in my eyes, I was just average.
"Which residential college are we in?" We asked our Head Guy when we convinced Ally that she looked stunning.
"You three are in the Calhoun Residential College. Now I know you've probably read the handbook like every crazed new student here but I need to remind you again. Every residential college has its own dining hall where you can have breakfast, lunch and dinner. It can be a hang out spot for you too after a day of stressful classes. Also, there are tunnels that lead to the basement of your college that leads to a café hangout called The Buttery. Feel free to hang out there whenever. You've also got your own work-out facilities, student kitchen and library. Any questions?" He said this in one quick go like he himself had memorised the handbook.
"Is The Buttery opened twenty four hours?" Ally asked.
"It shuts at one and opens at six in the morning." He answered.
"Does it have a student car park?" I asked.
I don't think we parked in the right section and I was definitely not going to walk around Yale with my bags.
"Yes."
We didn't have any more questions and ventured off on our own, admiring the buildings and architecture even though we had been here a lot.
When you have a dream, you kind of want to visit it all the time.
What I loved the most, though, was that there were coffee carts everywhere you looked. I think I may have been destined to marry a barista if he would continuously smell like coffee. That's why I had been urging Jacob to try and apply for a job in a café.
"Do you think Jacob's arrived?" I spoke my thoughts loudly.
"Probably not. Classes don't start for a couple of days and I think he's delaying college as much as possible."
Jacob didn't share my excitement over college and it was weird. How could you not be excited over this stage in life?
We continued our bantering as we walked to our cars, hopping in and getting directions for the student car park of the Calhoun Residential College. Once we parked our cars, I took a look at everything in my car and groaned internally. I had to freaking bring every bag in here to my dorm room. I could already seeing me give up next to a coffee cart and pay a few cute college guys to unpack my stuff for me.
If only Jacob was here today... If he was as smitten as my mum claimed for him to be, I could probably semi-seduce him into unpacking everything.
The girls and I decided to check out our dorm room before we began unpacking.
"How many rooms are we getting?" Ally asked as we made our way.
We collected our keys from the front of Calhoun Lobby and were all thankful that our dorm room was on the first floor. At least we wouldn't have to drag our bags up a heap of stairs.
"Two. I remember reading that there were two rooms because there's supposed to be four in each." I replied.
Yeah, I had done excessive amount of research about this place.
"So what are we going to do, then? How are we going to decide who gets one by themself?" Chelsea asked.
"Are we getting a roommate?"
"No, my dad said that some freshman applied for off-campus residence with their brother who was a senior and they accepted. So they cut us one off for our dorm."
"So we're back to our dilemma. How are we going to decide?" Ally asked.
Before anyone could wrap their heads around what was going through my mind, I jumped in my place and screamed 'not it' really loudly.
The girls both looked at me with shock and frustration, knowing that I had gotten the single room.
"No! That's not fair! We didn't declare it yet." Chelsea pouted, trying to make a reasonable argument but knowing that there was nothing for her to do.
I, myself, was doing an internal happy dance. First day of college and I already established that I was having my own room.
"I'm fine with that. I wanted a roommate anyway." Ally shrugged.
She had a big family and was used to sharing her room with three sisters anyway.
We walked into the residential hall and found our room number. Ally put in the key and turned it, unlocking it.
What I found in there was completely opposite to what I had expected.
It was completely furnished.
We knew that we would have to bring in whatever it was to make ourselves feel at home when we moved it but I did not expect to walk into a fully furnished dorm room.
As soon as we opened the door, we were standing in the common room which was a round the size of half a tennis court.
The walls were all painted a very light grey that made the room seem very calming and neutral. The back wall had a long, navy corner couch across that screamed comfort. There were a few bean bags lying around and a printed thick, plush rug covered the oak floors.
On the South wall was a large, mounted TV with a small TV cabinet underneath that had all the gadgets installed. There were a few side tables around with a pot of flowers, books and magazines laying on the top.
The whole thing was designed perfectly. But what struck me most was on the East side wall. It was a large, magnificent sized bookcase that took my breath away. I had been worried about where all my books would go, especially if I had to room with someone. And now, as well as my DVD's, my books would be placed on this gorgeous bookcase.
There were three doors along the walls, two being the bedrooms and one being the bathroom. There was, apparently, no need for a kitchen since there was a student kitchen somewhere in the Calhoun building. I personally thought that that was ridiculous. What if I wanted to make something as simple as a sandwich?
I'd have to talk to my mum about buying a mini refrigerator and portable bench for my bedroom if I ever wanted to make something simple.
"Wow..." Ally spoke the words we had all been thinking.
"Furnished?" I asked. "Seriously?"
I couldn't believe it. I had researched Yale inside and out, basing most of my research on the residential colleges and what the dorm rooms seemed like and it never, ever said that it was furnished.
"I think this may have been my dad." Chelsea spoke, walking towards the couch and plopping herself into a comfortable position.
She sunk into the corner of the leather couch and grinned.
"Yep. Definitely my dad. I know the type of furniture he buys and this is his signature." She nodded.
I looked at one of the three doors on the walls and back at the girls.
"Since you guys are sharing, you can take a pick on which bedroom you want." I told them.
Chelsea all but ignored me, her feet already rested on the ottoman and the remote in her hands, flicking through the channels. Ally laughed and opened the first door which was the bathroom.
It was pretty nice considering this was a dorm room. It had a polished white, wide vanity, large shower and toilet. Storage was pretty minimal though; luckily the girls and I all needed the same thing.
We both walked out of the bathroom and Ally opened up one of the bedroom doors, showing two beds inside with a large corner desk. We had all gone through all the means to get new mattresses since there was definitely no chance that I'd be using a mattress that someone had slept in with their sweat and God knows what...
I'd rather a brand new mattress that I could trust. The rooms were pretty average sized. Two single beds, a pretty decent corner desk and a bookshelf, with enough room for any of us to put in our own stuff.
I left Ally and walked into the other bedroom and saw that it was pretty much the same thing as the last one except it had a large window and built in seat bench underneath the window. I could already see myself sitting on the bench with a cup of coffee and a good book.
I walked back outside and Ally was showing Chelsea the room.
"You like it?" Ally asked.
"Yeah, they're the same thing anyway. And plus, I'll be hanging out in the common room most of the time." Chelsea shrugged.
"Okay!" Ally grinned, clapping her hands together in excitement. She turned to me and saw me watching her in amusement. "You can take that room." She said, pointing to the bedroom behind me.
"Okay, but I'm going to have to do something about that bed." I replied, worried that I'd be stuck with a stupid bed all year when it isn't needed.
"My dad will take care of that." Chelsea yelled from that same sunken position on the couch.
"Spoiled brat." Ally mumbled.
"Heard that!"
"Good!"
I laughed at the two girls and went to my new bedroom, sitting on the edge of the bed and made a phone call to my mum.
"Your dad has business up in New Haven anyway, I'll get him to come passed and drop a refrigerator off for you." She told me after much description and complaints.
"And a portable bench?"
"And a portable bench." She agreed, and I could almost see her bobbing her head up and down.
"Have you seen Jacob in town?" I asked her.
"Yeah, I walked passed him in the town square today. He said he'll be there in two days."
Two days? But that's when classes started! He was so, so lucky that he made it to Yale. By some miracle four people in our small town were accepted. I'm pretty sure Chelsea's dad had much to do with it since he was close tied with the people in admissions.
But anyway, he was extremely lucky to make it to an Ivy League school and he should definetly not be taking advantage of that.
"Doesn't he know classes start that day?" I asked.
"Don't know, Enna. He's your boyfriend, not mine." My mum sang.
I rolled my eyes and we talked for a bit longer before I finally decided to hang up and start the unpacking process. We had the mattress guys come passed our room and take all our mattresses. Chelsea made a phone call to her dad and organised for me to get rid of that extra bed and that was arranged really quickly so I managed to start unpacking.
"You think we can just pay some cute guys to do this for us?" Chelsea grumbled as we dragged our bags to our dorm rooms.
"Yeah, I hear guys are easily seduced." Ally was the innocent one, never having a boyfriend.
"I will not seduce anyone." I laughed.
"That's because you have a boyfriend. We're single. I'm so selling my virtue to some guy to do this for me." Ally argued.
Okay, so maybe not that that innocent.
Nonetheless, it took us a full two hours to have everything (including our mattresses) from our car and packed into our dorm room. The common room was fully furnished so we left that alone. We unpacked all our toiletries into our bathrooms and I put my mattress onto my bed.
I put bed sheets onto the quilts, and unpacked all my college stationary and notebooks into my desk. I had a mini refrigerator, small TV and lamp coming to my room tomorrow with my dad when he came down for work. Even so, all that unpacking didn't take long. It was mainly the unpacking of all my clothes and whatnot and DVD's and books.
I was a complete book and TV geek so it only made sense when most of the large bookcase in the common room was filled with my DVD's and books. The girls relied on me for the entertainment sources anyway so they didn't bring much of that.
Ally had also brought a heap of game boards so we expected four years of full-fledged fun.
***
"Popcorn ready?" I asked, shutting my now packed bedroom after putting on a pair of pyjama shorts and t-shirt.
"Yes." Ally replied, closing the dorm room door and plopping herself onto the couch. "I can't believe I had to go to the student kitchen just to heat up a bag of popcorn."
"Well at least they've provided us with a student kitchen. Be grateful for that." Chelsea remarked, walking out of her bedroom and sitting herself in between Ally and I.
"Shut up. You always need to be level-headed and reasonable." Ally grumbled.
Before they can begin their bantering, I shushed them and put Gone with the Wind into the DVD player. I had my movie rules. The most important rule was 'no talking'. And then other stuff like 'no breathing' came after that. I loved my movies. And my books. But the idea of a storyline just excited me. It was one of the many reasons why I wanted to become a screenplay writer for when I finished from here.
I planned on getting experience in writing first. Probably join the journalist's team for the Yale Paper. But I thought my writing skill was okay and my creativity was pretty top notch. I just wanted to create stories that people would remember. I wanted to write something magnificent. Like Titanic. Or The Shawshank Redemption.
It was, well, a passion. But I knew that it would be difficult getting into that kind of field. I was kind of lucky that I was determined. Or stubborn. Whatever.
Anyway, I was majoring in Creative Writing. I had nine compulsory courses that I had to take in order for me to get my degree for my major and the rest of my courses were electives that were generally just for fun. I was only taking one compulsory course this semester and three electives.
I chose Journalism for my compulsory course for my major and my three electives were Psychology: Social Science, American Literature: The Memory of Slavery and American Politics: The Idea of Power. Pretty interesting if you ask me but the girls weren't doing any of them which meant I'd be alone.
I wasn't all that social so making friends was probably out of the question. But, I was here for the education and if I wanted a social life, I had my two girls.
I had two classes a day except for Thursday which was my day off. And the weekend of course. And I chose morning classes too, which gave me the rest of the day for work and exploring Yale.
And my first class was in just two short days.
Oh, the excitement.

Authors Note:
So, they're in college! Awoohooo! I literally went on a virtual tour of Yale so I would get the details of the residential colleges right! Dedication right there ;D
Anyway, so if you haven't already noticed, the storyline for Sienna and her mother and stuff is definitely inspired by Gilmore Girls. My sister just pointed me towards it and I started watching it a few weeks ago and I'm in love with the show and I'm not stealing any ideas, it's all inspiration!
If you haven't already seen it, you should definitely check it out!
And, every chapter is going to be titled after a movie. These movies are films that I have seen before and greatly recommend as awesome movies to watch if you haven't already. I'm sure most of you have seen Pitch Perfect but being a huge Matt Damon fan, I went on a marathon of all things Matt Damon and stumbled upon Goodwill Hunting which is pretty awesome.
Photo of Liam Turner played by gorgeous Zac Efron! He'll be coming in next chapter!
I loved him in Charlie St Cloud!
I'm sick guys and I feel so blah. So annoying. Ugh... Medicine better work.
Anyways...
