Chapter 7 ~ Luke Meets My Father
I held my hands out in front of me, stepping slowly in the pitch black. All I could here was my steady breathing and feet dragging against the hard floor. My hands stopped against something rough and pointy. I flicked it, but nothing happened. Suddenly, a small light flashed in my eyes.
"Is it working?" I heard my father ask.
"No, the fuse is blown." I replied squinting against the light from his torch and sighed. "I think we have to all an electrician."
"I'm on it." Dad wheeled to the wall phone and dialled the electrician.
I found another torch in one of the drawers in the kitchen and turned it on. I stepped carefully to the lounge room, making sure that I wouldn't trip over anything on my way. I was expecting Luke to come over soon, but with the blackout it would be hard to see him. He wanted to meet my father, which I immediately denied as Dad was way too protective at the moment, but Luke insisted. I didn't know why he wanted to meet Dad. I just hope it would go well.
There was a soft knock at the front door and I opened it, revealing Luke with a sheepish smile and his hands behind his back. His smile faded into an easy grin as his eyes laid on mine and he relaxed his posture. "Hey Skye, I thought your father would be answering the door."
"You say that as if it's a good thing I answered the door."
"It is." He said.
I laughed and invited him in. He took a seat on the couch and I stood beside him, waiting for Dad. Luke fidgeted with his fingers and tapped his foot quickly on the floor. I could only just see him in the dark.
I smiled at how uncomfortable he looked. "Why are you so nervous? It's not like we're dating."
He was silent for a moment. "I know, but it's you father."
He had a good point there.
I had no idea why I wasn't as nervous as Luke. If my father doesn't approve of Luke then I wouldn't be able to hang out with him anymore. Luke was the only one who could make me smile and laugh other than Layla. He is my only other friend.
"Why is it so dark in here?" Luke asked.
"Oh. There was a blackout. Dad is just calling the electrician now."
"Oh, okay."
I heard my fathers voice down the hallway and he entered the room. His eyes widened slightly when they fell upon Luke. He looked at me. "The electrician is on his way in an hour." He said, then turned to Luke and held his hand out. "I'm Stan."
Luke stood there and stared at Stan's hand for a few seconds before he grabbed it and shook it. "Nice to meet you sir, I'm Luke."
I held my breath to stop myself from snickering at how Luke was being so polite.
"What brings you here Luke?" Dad asked him.
"I wanted to meet you, sir."
"Are you friends with Skye?"
"Yes."
Stan nodded and I couldn't figure out if he approved of Luke or not. He turned to me, his mouth curled into a small smile. "Skye, I need you to get me a screwdriver from my bedroom. The toolbox is underneath my bed."
"Sure." I walked over to Luke. "Will you be fine with my Dad alone until I get back?" I asked in a low whisper.
Luke nodded and I smiled at him before going to my fathers bedroom to fetch the tool. I opened his door and was greeted by darkness. No surprise there. I crouched down and rested on my knees, reaching underneath Stan's bed and finding the screwdriver with my hands. Once my fingers touched something cold and hard, I knew it was the toolbox.
