Chapter 14 ~ Hope Somehow Found Its Way Back
Pamela's friend Roady was willing to help us restore Nate's memories, but the real challenge was finding my brother and getting him to stay so Roady can use his ability. It was going to be tough.
Dad insisted that I would go to school, even though I wouldn't be safe, he wanted me to continue schoolwork. I guess I did miss out on a lot of school, and I haven't heard from Layla in a while too.
I hope she'll forgive me.
Luke and I entered the school building. Dad also wanted Luke with me at all times to protect me. It was nice of him to look out for me, but I can take care of myself. Luke held my hand tightly as we walked down the halls towards my locker. I could feel people's eyes on me, whispers filled the hall. I lowered my head and walked a little faster to avoid their gazes. I hated the attention.
"You alright?" Luke asked as we stopped in front of my locker.
"Yeah, thanks for walking me to my locker."
He nodded and lifted his hand up to stroke my cheek. "Don't let what everyone is saying about you stop you from being yourself. I don't want something bad to happen to you anymore." He told me, concern and guilt filling his eyes.
I closed my eyes and concentrated on the feel of Luke's warm hand on my cheek. I opened my eyes and stared into Luke's ocean blue orbs. How did I end up with someone so perfect? After grabbing out the books for my next class, I turned around and noticed Layla walk by.
"Layla?" My voice made her stop. Her was was still focused to the ground, her hands were shaking slightly. I began to walk up to her, but then she started moving away from me. "Layla wait!" I ran after her as she turned the corner. I saw her run to class when I called her name again, she stopped with her back facing me.
"What do you want?" She asked me after I had caught up with her.
"Layla, I'm so sorry-"
"Sorry? How can I possibly forgive you? You haven't returned my messages, you haven't been to school in weeks, you haven't contacted anyone." Her voice was different. She didn't sound angry, like she usually did when I did something wrong, she sounded extremely disappointed. Which almost bothered me more.
"You haven't told me Nate woke from the hospital and disappeared." She turned to face me, tears streaming down her red cheeks. How did she know about that? "And most of all, you haven't told me everything." Her voice cracked at her last words.
"Layla, please let me explain everything to you." I begged her, my voice shaking.
She shook her head and lowered her eyes. "No, I can't let you do that, I just need time. You've been avoiding me, it's only fair if I avoid you." Her words sunk deep inside my brain. Perhaps she was right, it was only fair, but my insides churned and my heart cringed.
"At least I still know you're safe. I will be there for you from now on, even if you don't want me to." I said softly. I felt Luke's hand rest on my shoulder and I saw Layla's eyes fix on him confusedly.
She left us alone, I watched her walk off and disappear into the crowd with hot tears blurring my vision. For the rest of the day Layla avoided me, Luke was there for me, and people were staring at me. I knew I hadn't been to school in a while, and with my bruises and scars that were left behind on my body from my encounter with Noah, it made the teachers and students give me curious looks.
"How are we going to get your brother to stay with Roady long enough for him to restore the memories back?" Luke asked as we walked home, our hands entwined with each other.
