Chapter 20 ~ The Plan Worked

I curled my fingers into my sweaty palms as they were shaking uncontrollably. Staring at the front of Noah's headquarters, I inhaled a deep breath and closed my eyes, remembering what Dad had told me before.

"Listen, Nate can trick your mind. You must be careful, don't look him in the eyes, and if you have to, use your powers against him."

"But Dad...my powers, I-I can't-"

"Skye, my sister hasn't used her powers for many years, and she regrets every single moment, I can see it in her eyes. Don't make the same mistake she did."

I let out the breath I held and headed for the front doors of the building. I wandered down the halls, searching through each room carefully without being noticed to find where Nate was. I was determined to find my brother and I would do whatever it took to get him back, even if that does mean using my powers.

As I rested my hands on the knob of an interesting door with a golden patterned arch displayed on it, a voice from behind me spoke. "If you want Noah, he's not in there." I recognised the voice anywhere, and hot water almost sprung to my eyes at the familiar sound.

"Where is he?" I asked still facing the door.

"He's left to do business with someone."

"What kind of business?"

"Nothing that concerns you." His sharp words sliced through the silent hall and I winced at his tone. "Why do you want him anyways? Did you fail your mission?" He teased sarcastically.

I turned around to face my brother, my fathers words still inside my brain as my eyes gazed upon his chin, safely avoiding his eyes. "I didn't fail, I just need help controlling those...brats, so I can kill them." I kept a blank stare, choosing my words carefully, making sure they came out bitter and nasty so my lie can trick Nate.

I felt his eyes on me, trying to see through me, but he shook his head and sighed. "Fine, you're hopeless. I don't know why Noah even spared your life."

My stomach clenched at his words. He said I wasn't worth living.

He's brainwashed, remember?

When he turned around and began to walk away, I shook the thoughts away and followed him out of the building. I felt like doing a hundred backflips because Nate fell for my lie, and I couldn't believe that this plan actually worked. My insides were jumping around and I almost smiled at the feeling, but I had to keep myself under control before I wreck everything.

Like I always did.

Nate lead me through the forest surrounding the headquarters and in what felt like minutes (with my mind occupied with excited thoughts), we arrived out the front of my house.

Before Nate walked up to the front door, I tugged on his shoulder and he faced me with narrowed eyes. "I think you should let me go in first, after all, they do believe that I'm on their side."

"What do you mean?" He folded his arms across his chest.

"I mean that I decided to let them think that I am on their side, so when I enter that house they won't think something's up."

He was silent for a moment, his fingers tapped on his chin as he stared down at the footpath below him, before he said, "Whatever, I'll wait for your signal out here."

I nodded and moved past him towards the house. I looked back at Nate as I reached the front door and bit my bottom lip, and then I quietly and quickly entered the house. "Hello?" I whispered into the dark room and Luke appeared with a worried look on his face before it was replaced with relief.

"It's okay, it's just Skye." He called out behind him and Dad, Layla and Roady came into the room.

"Are you hurt? Did the plan work? Did Nate believe you? Is he here?" Dad bombarded me with questions and I giggled softly at his sudden behaviour.

"I'm fine, the plan worked! He's out there right now waiting for my signal to come inside." I answered.

"Good. Give him the signal, and once he's inside, Roady and Luke, grab him and pin him down so we can return his memories. But we must hurry." Dad gave out his orders and everyone followed.

I walked over to the window and pulled the curtain to the side. I saw Nate rubbing his temples with his fingers with an annoyed expression on his face. I waved shortly, giving Nate a nod as he noticed me through the window. He immediately began to walk up the driveway and stopped at the front door. The door suddenly swing open, revealing my brother. His fists were tightly scrunched into balls and fell my his sides as he searched the dark room before his eyes landed on me. The dry lump in my throat caused me to choke a little when I tried to swallow it down. His gaze was so full of hate and anger that my heart began to clench.

"Where are they?" He asked me and before I could answer, Luke and Roady jumped out from behind the shadows and grabbed an arm each of Nate. "Ah, here they are." He said and shockingly, he flipped both Luke and Roady over, both of them landing on their backs.

Nate whipped his head towards me and our eyes locked. His green orbs glowed as they poured into mine and his voice began to echo in my head. He whispered things I couldn't understand and all of a sudden everything was black. I yelped out as I felt hundreds of tiny legs crawl up and down my arms and legs. I tried to brush them away, but more seemed to pour out. I tried to see what it was that was crawling on me and my eyes became clear and I saw millions of large spiders scatter all over me, their hairy bodies brushing against me making me shiver in fright.

They all came out of my mouth, and I screamed loudly, my voice muffled from the arachnids. They were everywhere, they were all over me and they wouldn't go away. Nate's whispers and my shrill screams were all I could hear as I gasped for air, the spiders clogging up my mouth. I had to swallow them, so I did, and I felt them crawl inside of me, earning another frightful scream from me.

It wasn't until I heard Layla yell, "Enough!" When I was sucked back to reality.

I was suddenly on the floor of the lounge room, Nate standing over me looking at Layla, and Luke by my side holding my hand as I unconsciously squeezed it. "I said enough, please!" Layla said to Nate and he stared at her, bewildered for a moment. Then, he started groaning and he grabbed each side of his head, yelling in agony as he fell to his knees.

"He's starting to remember!" Roady said, kneeling by my brother side. "Nate, don't fight it. Give in!"

"Get away from me!" Nate yelled, gripping the edges of his hair and tugging on them roughly.

My chest rose and fell quickly and my breathing was short at the sight I was seeing. I could still feel the spiders crawling on me, causing goosebumps to arise on my skin. I knew it was just Nate tricking my mind, but my body thought otherwise and everything became blurry.

All I saw was Nate looking at me with confused eyes before my body shut down.
