Chapter 8 ~ Saving Luke: Part 1
I punched the numbers in the phone until I heard the dial tone. Luke's voice sounded and it went to voicemail. I internally groaned in frustration as I spoke into the phone. "Luke, please talk to me. I need to know where you are. I need to talk to you. Please call me back when you can." I hung up and threw the phone on my bed. I did this about fifty times, but Luke still wasn't answering.
I massaged my temples with my index and middle fingers to ease the sharp pains that throbbed inside my head. I needed to relax; the stress was too much for me. But how could I relax when Luke was the only thing I could think about?
I grabbed out my sketchpad and flicked through the used pages. Drawing after drawing, I admired each one and smiled at the memories each picture held. I stopped at the scribbled page with Luke's face hidden underneath the dark lines and I sighed deeply. He didn't answer any of my texts or calls. Did he change numbers to avoid me? Or was he in trouble?
I shook my head and got up from my bed, closing the sketchbook and putting it back on my beside table. I left my room and slipped on a pair of grey converse sneakers that were sitting beside the front door. I grabbed a backpack from the cabinet beside the couch and threw in some fruit, protein bars and a large bottle of water.
"Where are you going?" I heard my father ask from behind me.
I didn't turn around as I slung my bag over my shoulders. "I'm going to find Luke, Dad."
"You're not going alone. What if you get hurt?"
I sighed. "Dad, I can't do this now. I have to find him. You can either stay here, or come with me." I faced him. He had a concerned look on his face. "Don't worry; I've got the capsicum spray."
He nodded and frowned. "Be safe, Skye."
I pressed my lips together as an answer and left the house. What if I had to use my powers if Luke was in trouble? I promised myself I would never use them. I got into my car and turned on the engine. I drove, but I didn't know where I was heading. I didn't know where Luke lived or where he would be.
Come to think of it, Luke never told me about his family. He knew about my father and I've told him about my mother and Nate. Why wouldn't he tell me about his family? I'll have to ask him one day.
If you come back alive.
I stared down at my backpack that was sitting in the passenger seat for a moment. I just left my father. He lied to me and didn't bother helping me find Luke. It's like he doesn't care that I've finally opened up to someone that isn't Layla. And it's a boy! Why would he do that? And how could he just let me leave like that? He would never let me out at this time alone.
A loud honking noise interrupted my thoughts and grabbed my attention back to the road. I widened my eyes and swerved off into the side of the road, just missing another car. My car steered into a tree, slamming my head hard against the dashboard. My seatbelt choked me as it tightened for a brief moment around my chest. Then, everything was quiet.
My head ached, and I could hear the crunching of the ground growing louder. Good, someone's here to help me.
"Are you alright?" A male voice asked.
I turned my head slowly and nodded at the hooded man. My vision was too blurry to see him, but he looked familiar. "I'm fine." I croaked.
"Good. We'll need you fit and strong where you're going."
"What?"
I felt rough hands grab the back of my neck and squeeze tightly. My whole body filled with a numbing sensation. My only functioning sense was my hearing. Everything was black, but I knew I was still conscious. I felt no blindfold on me, it was like I was paralysed; both my body and my mind. I couldn't see or move anything. What just happened? I was being dragged across the dirt. Then, the sound of a car door opened.
