Exactly ten years in the future
Mary's POV
Today is the day of my sixteenth birthday. My dads told me I could have a party, but I told them I didn't want one. Instead, on my birthday, we packed the last of our boxes in the truck that uncle Gabriel had brought over. The title 'Gabe's Sweets' was emblazoned across the side, but it didn't matter. We were moving. Thank god. I hated the people at my school, all they did was make fun of my dads. I was ready to start over at a new school where the people already seemed a lot less judgmental. I had decided to change a lot. I lost weight, back down to a healthy weight. I tweaked my wardrobe a little, but I mostly just wore jeans and hoodies. I had even decided that I was going to dye my hair and start going by my middle name. I bleached my hair to a dirty blonde color, had my dads start calling me miracle, and bought a few new hoodies. We were moving to a cute little house with a nice front yard and a pool in the backyard. Once we had all the boxes packed into the truck, I picked up a heavy clay pot with a half grown maple tree in it. Dad Cas had agreed to let me transport my tree in his car so I didn't hurt it, so I hauled it into the car, on the floor of the passenger seat. Then, I wiggled into the seat with one leg on each side of the tree. It was winter, so the branches were bare. I had to be careful not to break the winter-brittle limbs. I tugged my seatbelt into place and clicked it, then pulled my door shut. Dad Cas got into the white car, yanking the door shut. "Ready to go Miracle?" He asked. I smiled and nodded. "Can't wait for a fresh start after what happened here..." I said, then forced a small laugh. Dad Cas started the car and pulled out, the candy truck following behind. I couldn't see it, but I knew that dad Dean would be behind the truck in his prized Impala. I looked down at the tree between my feet, smiling fondly. I still remembered the year we planted this tree...
~Flashback~
3rd person POV
April seventeenth, three o'clock in the afternoon.
Ten year old Mary was swinging alone in the park, eyes locked on her lap, eyes still stinging from the effort of holding back tears. She had just been told by her best friend that he wasn't allowed at her house anymore. Why? Because his dad had found out that she had two dads.
Her dads had found her there, holding her in a tight group hug, and let her cry until she couldn't cry anymore. Then they wiped the wetness off her cheeks, both kissed her forehead, and then took her home to the apartment.
Cas had ended up pulling out the kit Mary had gotten so long ago to plant a tree and asking if she wanted to try it. She had smiled and said yes. So together they planted this little seed, and Cas had told her that the tree would one day be big and strong enough that it would be able to protect her even if her dads weren't there. She knew it was more of a metaphor than anything, but she took it to heart. She watered the tree until it grew into a strong, hardy, but extremely slow-growing little tree.
~back to present~
I ran my hand along a thin branch, smiling. We were planning on planting it outside the new house, and hoped that it would grow better out of a Terra cotta pot and in the real open soil. I liked to imagine it growing huge and strong, and climbing into it to sit and read for hours at a time. Maybe if it got big enough, dad Dean would even be willing to help me build a treehouse... That would be nice. I leaned my head against the window and watched the scenery flash past, smiling as I left all my problems behind.
When we pulled up at the new house, I basically threw my door open as soon as the car was parked. I hauled my tree out and put it in the yard, right where I wanted to plant it. Then I ran to the candy truck to wait for Uncle Gabriel to get out. When he did, I grinned and held out my arms. He hugged me, then picked me up and spun once. He set me back on my feet and ruffled my hair. "What's up kiddo?" He smiled, slipping something into my hand. I looked down and saw a handful of lollipops sticking out of my hand. "Thanks Uncle Gabriel." I said with a wide grin. He patted my back and went to go help dad Dean. Uncle Sam got out of the other truck's door, and I ran around to hug him too. "Uncle Sam!!" I exclaimed, practically throwing myself into his arms. He hugged me tight for a few seconds, then I got my hair ruffled again. "Good to see you Miracle." He said with a warm smile.
My dads and my uncles brought most of the boxes in, only letting me carry the ones specifically for my room. With all the people we had helping, we had the truck unloaded into the house in a matter of hours. My dads invited my uncles to stay for dinner, but they declined. I walked them out to the candy truck, gave them both an extra big hug, then ran to my porch and watched as they got into their truck. I could see them through the windshield as they leaned in and kissed before driving away. I went back inside, went to my room, and started unpacking.
