*One Week Later*

*Alex's POV*

"Hey, Alex, have you seen that kid Jack today?" Rian asks, keeping his voice low so we don't get in trouble for talking in the 'silent' study hall.

"No, why?"

"I guess some people are saying he's in the hospital. Then again it is just a rumor so, it might be complete bullshit. You seem to be friends with him so I kinda figured you would know what was going on" He shrugs like it's something that happens everyday. What?! Why would Jack be in the hospital?! He didn't seem sick or anything when I saw him yesterday. A little upset about his current situation, but definitely not ill. I know I shouldn't assume the worst but after everything that I've been through it's inevitable.

"W-What would Jack be doing in the hospital? Why would he be there?" I stutter. Even though I've only known him for a short while, he's one of the few friends I have and one of the few people here to ever show me any type of kindness.

"I don't know, nobody else knows" He sighs. There's absolutely no way I'll be able to calm down until I find out what's going on. Thankfully this is the last period of the day and there's only one minute left. I look around and see at least four kids glaring at me, wha- oh. I've been absentmindedly tapping my foot in an attempt to calm my nerves. Wow that must've been pretty obnoxious.

"Sorry" I whisper, just before the final bell of the day rings and everyone disperses out of the classroom and into the busy hallway. I dart to my locker and run home as quickly as I possibly can. I've never been much of an athlete but this is an emergency. Maybe Jack's just got a stomach bug or something like that? It could happen. He could've just broken an arm or sprained a wrist or whatever? All those are better than the alternative version that's been screaming at the back of my mind, unwilling to be ignored.

"Hey Alex, why are you back so early? I wasn't expecting you home for another ten minutes or so" Mom wonders, coming into the front hallway, she stops and stares when she sees me huffing and puffing, trying to catch my breath. A look of concern washes over her features as she asks "Honey, what's going on?"

"I just need you to drive me to the hospital, I'll explain on the way" She grabs her purse and keys, then heads straight out to the car. I follow and she quickly drives in the direction of the nearest hospital, the one Jack's probably at.

"Now tell me why you need to be at the hospital" She demands. It wasn't the yelling type of demanding, just the very stern and to-the-point one.

"Jack's in the hospital, I don't know why or what happened but I think he tried to do something crazy"

"'Stupid teenage boy stunt' crazy or 'tragic' crazy?"

"Tragic crazy, mom" I mumble, anxious to see if he's okay

"I knew there was something going on with him. Alex, did he show any signs of being, y'know... unhappy?" Poor mom, she just doesn't know how to put it

"I'm trying to help him, I really am. But he just doesn't know how to handle stuff like this. He's used to being popular with everybody kissing the ground he walks on but now... He's just trying to get through each day..." I sigh and shake my head, the assholes at school have no reason to treat him this way.
