"I called Rian, I think it would be best for you boys to go to his house for the night" Mom says, her voice shakes and she wipes tears from her face

"Okay," I nod "Are we going back to school tomorrow?"

"Do you think you're ready for school?"

I look at Jack and he nods slightly "Yeah" Hopefully the taunting and bullying wont be so bad. Anything's gotta be better than sitting home and overthinking. Not to mention, Jack's gotta get his mind set on something else, he's tearing himself apart.

"Okay, get whatever you need for the night and for school. I'll drop you off at Rian's when you're ready"

Jack follows me upstairs and grabs his backpack "Listen, I'm sorry for that," I say quietly, throwing some clothes into a bag "I shouldn't have overreacted like that. It's just-"

"No Alex, it's fine," He gives me a small smile "I would've done the same thing"

"But it's not fine. Having some assholes from school terrorizing your family isn't fine! Seeing you beating yourself up and being depressed isn't fine! Everything going on in my life right now is not fine!"

He sighs "Alex, just take a deep breath. We'll go to Rian's house and forget about all of this for a while. Okay?"

I nod, closing my eyes and trying to calm down. Once we get to Rian's everything will be fine.

At least I hope so...

"Did you call the cops?" Rian asks, searching through his pantry for some snacks "I mean, there's gotta be something they can do. Some way to find out who did it"

"I think my dad called them," Alex sighs "But it's spray paint so they can't really do a handwriting analysis or anything like that"

"He can just paint over it though, right?" He pulls a bag of chips off of a shelf and we follow him to the basement

"I guess. God knows there's enough cans of paint in the basement. One of them's gotta cover it"

"Well you'll be back in school tomorrow, you'll be busy catching up" Rian pats Alex on the shoulder "You wont have very much time to worry about things like this"

I glance over at Zack, who had been silently watching some television show in the corner of the room. Sometimes I wish I were as muscular as him, that way I could protect Alex. If anyone said anything to upset him I could just beat them up. But no, I'm just little old lanky Jack.

Maybe someday I'll be able to say I defended Alex. That I saved him from his bullies. Someday...
