*Jack's POV*
I wake up and hear Alex's soft snoring beside me. His chest slightly rising and falling every so often. My mouth curves into a sad smile as I sigh. Me being here is putting him and his family in a pretty bad place. Someone smashed half their damn windows because of me! God knows he wont let me leave today. At least if I sneak out, I know he'll be safe.
Since I'd kept most of my clothes and things in my bag, it didn't take very long to gather up all of my belongings. Pulling on a hoodie and some sneakers, I throw my bag over my shoulder and slip silently through the hallway. Here's the hard part, the stairs creak. Not just a normal little squeak, they sound like a damn door being slammed shut.
However, I managed to make it down the stairs without causing any major noise. "See you at school -Jack" I scribble the quick, nonsense note on what appeared to be a blank sheet of paper, but seeing as it was still dark out, could've been a grocery list. Leaving the note on the kitchen counter where he's sure to see it, I head outside.
I was about halfway to my house when I heard a low rumbling sound coming from the road behind me. Most people would assume it's just someone driving to work. But there was no mistaking that loud muffler. It was Joey Samuels and his dumbass friends, driving around in his shitty old truck, looking for kids who were on their way to school, as they did nearly every morning. I see the headlights growing bigger as the truck gets closer and am about to turn and run into someones yard when one of Joey's friends yells
"Hey fag! Heard you almost bit the dust last week!" I shake my head in disgust and keep my eyes locked on the ground ahead of me. The truck stops next to me and all I hear is laughing, followed by me getting hit by multiple objects. Before I had time to think about it I grabbed a stone off the sidewalk and hurled it as hard as I could into the open passenger side window.
"Ow! You hit me in the fucking eye you son of a bitch!" Someone screams. After quickly realizing what I had just done, I take off sprinting towards my house. The truck turns around and I pick up the pace, fearing what will happen if they catch up to me.
I get to my front door and frantically search my backpack for the house key. For a second time stands still as I realize Alex put my key on the kitchen table.
Oh fuck!
*Alex's POV*
I wake up and feel that Jack's side of the bed is cold. Well it's not Jack's side of the bed... Just the side he was sleeping on last night... I mean... He was there but now he's not. His backpack is missing from its usual spot at the end of my bed.
I open my bedroom door and look around the upstairs hallway. "Jack?" I ask quietly. There's no response.
I wander downstairs and find a note on the counter "See you at school -Jack" Oh no. He went home. But why? Is he okay? Was it me? Did I do something wrong?
I'm about to head over to his house to see if he went home when I hear a huge thump on the front porch.
*Jack's POV*
The truck stops and Joey jumps out, followed by his friends. I run behind the house and hop the fence into the neighbors yard, putting me on the other side of the street. Then I race back towards Alex's house. Whatever those guys threw at me was sticky and dripping off my clothes as I ran.
I trip up the front porch steps and practically crawl into the house, making sure to lock the door as I entered. My lungs burn, begging for air and my legs feel as though they've turned to jelly.
"Jack?" Alex's voice rings through the foyer. His shadow appears beside me as he flicks on the light. Instantly his eyes widen and he gasps "Jack! What happened to you?!"
"I was just going for a walk because I couldn't sleep..."
"So you brought all of your stuff" He sighs and helps me up off the floor
"Umm..."
"Where did the eggs come from and... Oh dear your cheek is bleeding pretty badly"
"Joey Samuels and his pack of rats kinda showed up and threw them at me..." I shrug
"Then what happened to your cheek?" He asks, running a towel under the sink before holding it over the cut "Did he do this to you?"
"No. I tripped on the stairs and must've hit my head or something"
"Are you sure?" He raises his bushy eyebrows
"I'm sure" I nod
"You should probably take a shower... There's egg all in your hair"
"Yeah..." I start towards the bathroom when Alex asks
"What made you come back here?"
I sigh and reach into my pocket, pulling out my house keys which I was sure I'd left here. They were right with me the whole time. I swear I could remember Alex taking them earlier... But in the end the whole reason I came back was... "You" I say quietly
*Alex's POV*
I sit at the table and rest my head on my hands. The only noise in the house was the shower running. Oh what should I do? Glancing at the clock on the stove I notice that it's only 6:46 in the morning. Well, there's no going back to sleep after all this. I set Jack's backpack on the floor in my room and head back downstairs.
The question pops into my head once again; Why did he want to leave so badly?
Maybe he's just homesick?
Oh who knows...
