After I've handed in my report for the case I head to the locker room. On my way in I do a quick scan to ensure that no one else is here. I then go to my locker and slump down on the bench in front of it. I bury my head in my hands and let out a shaky breath. I then let the tears flow out of my eyes and down my cheeks. This case was extremely hard on me and I've been holding back tears all day long. I can't stop seeing the image of the dead bodies in my mind.

Very soon I'm crying so much that I'm heaving and sobbing at the same time. This continues for another few minutes before I feel someone's hand on my back. I look up and see Halstead with a concerned look on his face. I quickly regain my composure and say, "I'm sorry that you had to see me like this."

He shrugs and says, "It's nothing. If you don't mind my asking though, what's wrong?"

As he takes a seat beside me I say, "It was just a really tough case. I think it made it worse that I found the bodies."

He nods and says, "That was a pretty rough start to intelligence. I don't think that anyone else had that bad of a start."

"Does it ever get any easier?"

He thinks for a moment and says, "In all honesty, there will always be the hard days where all you want to do is cry, give up, and you don't want to muscle through the pain. What makes the job we do worthwhile are the days where you reunite a family with their daughter who has been missing for a year. Those are the days where you realize that you do all of the hard things in this job for a reason. They're the days that you discover that what you do is so important for all of the people of the city that you serve."

I smile at him and say, "Thank you Jay. That really helped me."

He nods and says, "You're welcome Evelyn. I'll see you tomorrow, okay?"

I nod, gather my things, and go home.
