PERCY

Mrs. Camaro slams my latest English test on the desk in front of me, and I groan. It's upside-down, a sure sign that I failed.

Again.

I don't even bother looking at the paper, since I haven't gotten grade higher than a D in my entire life.

The life I can remember, anyway.

My mom says that I used to be a "special kid," whatever that meant, but I never bothered asking her to explain what the heck she was talking about.

As soon as the bell rings, I bolt out of class, down the hallway, and out the front doors.

A lot of kids hate Mondays, but just to prove how weird I am, Monday is my favorite day of the week. The few friends I have ask me why all the time, but it's kind of hard to explain, so I simply tell them that it's when I can swim. Every Monday I go to the Y down the street and swim like fifty laps. It was my mom's idea, and sometimes while I swim I get weird flashes of pictures that I can't explain. A girl with blond curls, a guy with goat legs, a giant ship with a dragon masthead...

Like I said, none of it makes sense.

When I reach the glass double-doors of the Y, my mom is waiting for me, which makes me stop in my tracks.

"Mom?"

"Percy, we have to go home." My mom looks really worried, which is pretty abnormal.

"Why? Mom, it's Monday!" See what I'm talking about?

"There's someone at the apartment to see you." Now she looks really stressed, so I decide to follow her back to our apartment building without further argument.

When we reach the building, my mom quickly ushers me through the sliding door, up the staircase, and into our rundown apartment. My dad is on his laptop in what passes for our living room, apparently focused on something for the class he teaches at the local private school.

"Hey, Percy!" he says overenthusiastically. He smiles what even I can tell is a fake smile, and his eyes are worried.

"Where is he?" I ask.

"Who?"

"Mom says there was someone here to see me or something."

"Oh! Yeah, she's in your room."

"She's in my room?!"

My parents exchange a look. "Yes, you can go on back; we'll wait here," Mom says.

So I head back into my room. It's kind of small: just enough room for a bed, a leather chair, a desk, and a closet, with a five-by-three area of shag carpet in the middle.

Sitting on the bed is a girl I realize with a jolt to be the girl I see when I'm swimming.

"Oh, my gods, Percy! I can't believe it!" She stands runs over and throws her arms around my neck, and I can't help jumping back. She recoils, looking hurt.

"Sorry, but who are you?" I ask.

She raises an eyebrow, then grins. "Nice try, Seaweed Brain."

"What?"

Her jaw drops open, and a wave of realization washes over her face. "Wait, do you really not remember me?"

"Uh, no, should I?"

She pauses. "Do you have a sink I can use?"

"Yeah, why?"

She runs out and into the kitchen, pulling a gold coin out of her pocket.

"I have to talk to Chiron."
