Tara

"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you. Happy birthday dear Kai, happy birthday to you!" Everyone sung all around Kai as she stood in front of the cake.

"Blow out your candles, Kai." I told her.

She blew out her candles with the help of August. I can't believe my baby is three already. Time really flies.

"Can we eat it now?" Leilani asked, getting impatient.

"Girl, you just ate like three hot dogs and a burger. I don't know where you get those eating habits from." Chris said.

"So." She rolled her eyes at him.

"Watch it. I'm not Lani. That's who you get that shit from." He shook his head.

"Shut up, Chris." Lani hit him upside the head.

"You be acting real fresh around your best friend. Just wait till we get home." He gave her a look.

I looked down to see all the kids digging their hands in the cake, helping themselves. Leilani was just scarfing it all down. I'm not even sure she had a chance to taste it.

The doorbell ringed, and I left the backyard to go answer it. I opened the door to see Christian. The last time I spoke to him was when he and August fought in my house.

"What are you doing here?" I asked, placing my hands on my hips.

"I came to give Kai her present. You think I would just miss her birthday?" He shook his head.

"Well give it to me." I held my hand out for him to hand me the huge box that was wrapped.

"I said I was going to give it to Kai." He replied in a matter of fact tone.

"I-"

"What the hell is he doing here?" August said behind me.

I cursed to myself. This was what I was trying to avoid.

"He was just bringing Kai a present." I turned around to face him. He didn't look happy at all.

"He can take it back." August glared at him.

"Why? I'm just giving my daughter a present for her birthday." Christian said. I know he said that to piss August off.

"She's not your fucking daughter." August spat, walking a little closer.

Alarmed, I quickly stepped in front of him.

"I mean legally, I am." Christian smirked.

Oh God.

"What is he talking about, Tara?" August transitioned his gaze to me.

"Oh, you didn't know I'm the one on her birth certificate? Oops." He laughed.

I saw the fire burning at August's eyes. As bad as he probably wanted to beat Christian into the ground, he didn't. He didn't want to ruin Kai's birthday.

He stormed off to one of the guest rooms, slamming the door.

"Somebody's mad." Christian joked. But I didn't see anything funny about that.

I didn't plan on telling August just yet.

"Why would you do that, Christian?" I sighed, rubbing my temples.

"I thought he knew." He shrugged. "Tell Kai I said happy birthday." He handed me the present and left.

I sat it by the door and went to check on August. I walked in, watching him pace the floor. When he heard the door shut he snapped his neck in my direction.
