Chapter 4

Victoria's POV

After Chizuru and I were dismissed we were "escorted" back to our room for the night. I say escorted but I mean dragged, even after their decision to keep us they thought we'd run away. I thought Souji made it fairly clear that there was nowhere and no one for me to go to, why would I leave? Plus no place that I knew of had these many handsome men in one area. Bonus!

*Time skip to a few days later*

It has been a few days since Chizuru and I were taken in by the Shinsengumi and we were both pretty tired of being kept in our rooms for most of the day. That's right, Chizuru and I had been separated and given our own rooms. We were both girls but the rest of the Shinsengumi soldiers didn't know that they thought Chizuru was a boy. I was lucky enough to get to leave the headquarters to shop for clothes, women's clothes. I was currently wearing a purple kimono covered in lighter purple flowers that extended all the way to the base of my kimono. Underneath I wore a regular white kimono as extra layering considering it was now winter. They weren't the most comfortable or easiest things to wear but I was thankful that I could blend in better which was the next step to getting to leave my room and get out with the Shinsengumi.

I had talked to Souji more in the past few days because he was somehow always close by when I wanted someone to talk to. He informed me that the other captains wanted to use me as some sort of undercover intelligence agent. I would disguise myself and go undercover to gather information on the enemies...but Hijikata thought it was dangerous, he didn't like the idea. This was my only chance at being useful, I mean I still had my job as one of Hijikata's assistants but what fun was that? All I ever did was make tea. Luckily Hijikata was on a business trip in Osaka with Sannan-san so they weren't around. I was going to try and convince the Captains to let me outside, I was becoming kind of lonely. The least they could do is let me and Chizuru eat together. Suddenly I began to recall the meeting me and Chizuru had been pulled to a few days ago.

Flashback~

Hijikata, Sannan, and Souji were the only ones in the room apart from Chizuru and I. "The Shinsengumi will take care of you both. But we can't allow a girl to walk around headquarters defenceless" Hijikata said. I wondered what he meant, wasn't he the one who said I had to dress like a girl from now on? "We would like you to continue dressing as a boy" Hijikata instructed looking to Chizuru. When he looked to me his eyebrows creased together like he was struggling to say something. "As for you, the captains and I have been discussing your use to us and we've decided to label you as a Shinsengumi ally and place you under our protection" Hijikata explained, I nodded firmly signalling I understood. "With that being said, the presence of a woman within the Shinsengumi will...unsettle some of the soldiers, they may begin to question your reason for being here. You must pay that no mind and allow us to explain it to them to ensure there's no confusion" Sannan-san said while looking at me. Once again I nodded.

He looked to Chizuru and explained to her why it would be best for her to continue dressing as a man. "It would be more difficult covering for two women rather than one" Hijikata added onto Sannan's explanation. "Not to mention your purpose is to help us identify the whereabouts of Kodou Yukimura, we have no interest in endangering your life by exposing you as his daughter" Sannan informed Chizuru who nodded simply. "On the other hand, Rose-kun has volunteered to assist us in our endeavours. Going undercover to gather information and possibly risking her life is part of the deal, isn't that right, Rose-kun?" Sannan-san asked in confirmation. I nodded in agreement. "Yes, there's no other purpose for me here so I'm more than happy to serve the Shinsengumi" I replied bluntly. I saw Chizuru give me a saddened look, she probably pitied me, I had no family, no home, no friends, nothing. I was simply living off of the Shinsengumi's kindness.
