Original Fairy Tale Name: Tsuru no Ongaeshi (Crane's Return for a Favor/The Crane Girl)

Original Collector/Writer: Unknown

Once upon a time, there lived an old couple in Japan named Sumeragi and Mikoto. They were childless, but they didn't mind, for they had each other.

One day when Sumeragi was walking to the nearby village on a snowy day with some fire wood, he heard a rattle nearby. Upon closer inspection, he saw that it was a crane, stuck in a trap. Feeling pity for the bird, Sumeragi knelt down and began to free the bird, speaking softly to not scare it.

"Hey, it's okay...." He whispers to the red crane. "I'm not going to hurt you."

After a few more minutes, the crane was freed. Smiling, Sumeragi stepped away as the bird spread its wings out and flew away. He waited to make sure that the crane wasn't going to fall before he went to the village to sell the wood. He stayed there for a few hours before returning home.

He was lucky to return when he did, as it began to snow harder. The roads were covered in snow, and the cold drove everyone in. As Sumeragi and Mikoto began to eat, they heard a small pounding on the door.

"Who can that be? It's too cold for travelers," Mikoto stated as she walked to the door. She opened it and gasped at the sight before her. A young girl in a brown cloak stood there, shivering.

"Ko-Ko-Konic-Konichiwa...." She shivered. "May I-I co-come in?"

Mikoto ushered the girl in and placed her in front of the fire, rushing to get her soup. After eating, the girl took off her cloak, revealing her tan skin and red hair.

"My name is Chibi. I live with my uncle and my grandfather, as I lost my parents as a child." She lowers her eyes. "I went to visit my uncle, but the snow blocked my path... May I request solace here?"

Sumeragi and Mikoto nodded. "Of course," Sumeragi stated. "May I ask your name?"

"Chibi."

The next morning, the snow had covered many of the roads that lead out of the village. As such, no one could travel anywhere, allowing Chibi to stay with Sumeragi and Mikoto for a little while.

After a few hours, Chibi approached Sumeragi and Mikoto. "May I live with you guys?" She pleads.

Mikoto and Sumeragi look at each other and smiled. "Of course," they told her.

She smiles. She shifts her feet and looks up. "Can you get me some yarn?"

"Of course," Mikoto stated as she went and grabbed her yarn. After taking it, Chibi looked at them with a serious look.

"I'm going to knit in my room. Don't open the door."

And with that, Chibi went into her room.

Despite the temptation, Mikoto and Sumeragi gave Chibi her space. They didn't wish to intrude on her.

Needless to say, when she came back with a woven blanket the next day, they were shocked. It was masterfully woven, and illustrated the myth of Kachi-Kachi Yama.

"Oh Chibi this is beautiful," Mikoto stated.

Chibi looked a little tired, but smiled. "You're welcome. You can sell it for extra money..."

Sumeragi nods and grabs the blanket. "I'll see if I can go to the village." He left and went to the busy market square, which was open despite the weather. As soon as Sumeragi entered the market, people bombarded him to get the blanket. He eventually sold it, earning a high profit. He returned home and put the money in a safe spot, making Chibi smile.

"Sumeragi-san... May I have some fabric?"

Sumeragi nodded and allowed Chibi to take the unused fabric Mikoto had. Chibi went to the room and closed it behind her, emerging two hours later with a beautiful shirt. She looked somewhat ill, but waved Sumeragi and Mikoto's concerns away. She had Sumeragi sell the shirt, and when he returned, Chibi went to her room again.

As Chibi was midway through her newest outfit, Mikoto knocked on her door. "Chibi? Chibi, I have some food for you." Forgetting that Chibi didn't want visitors, she opened the door and gasped.

A sickly red crane with a tan beak was making a dress with its feathers. It looked at Mikoto and dropped the dress.

"You weren't supposed to see this!" The crane wailed. "I'm so sorry..." And with that, she opened the window and flew off into the sky, leaving Sumeragi and Mikoto heartbroken.

Notes:

- It's never stated really if the couple was childless or not

- The girl said that she lived with unknown relatives

- After staying with the old couple for a day, she asks them to buy yarn - they didn't have any on hand

- The original tale had the girl used yarn. Here she switched to fabric after the first article made

- I can't remember what the girl males, but I think it's blankets.

- While in the tale the old woman goes to see what the girl does, here Mikoto accidentally forgot about that.
