I'll give this story one ending, and then show you another ending for this story. But be warned, they are both depressing.
Original Name: The Little Mermaid
Original Writer: Hans Christian Anderson
Once upon a time, there lived a young mermaid by the name of Ariel. She lived with her grandmother, her older sisters Olivia, Sumia, Robin, Camilla, and Hinoka, and her father Sumeragi, king of the ocean. As a child, she was fascinated by land, but she wasn't allowed near it. Her sisters, however, were allowed to visit land once a year, and when they returned home, all they could talk about was how awesome the land was.
And so Ariel impatiently waited her turn.
When Ariel turned 15, she was allowed a chance to see the human world. Excited, she swam to the surface and poked her head out of the water. She took in all the sights and sounds around her.
"This... This is awesome," she whispered.
She looked up at the boat near her. A party of sorts was being held for a person. Upon closer inspection, she saw that a party was being thrown for a prince on a boat. And Ariel fell in love with him.
However, the weather began to worsen. The boat began to rock, and one rogue wave sent the white and black haired prince overboard.
Oh no... Ariel thought. She dove beneath the waves and swam towards the prince. Grabbing his tunic, she dragged him to the surface. Spotting a temple, she dragged him there and stared at him.
"You're so handsome..." She whispered before she began to sing. Hearing footsteps, Ariel dove back into the sea and peeked her head above the water. The prince was waking up, and a young temple maiden was helping him stand.
"Thank you for saving me..." He told the temple maiden as they left.
Ariel felt betrayed. She just risked her life for him. Saddened, she returned home and swam to her grandmother's room.
"Grandma?" She asked as she swam in.
"Yes Ariel?"
"How long do humans live?"
"Not as long as mermaids. They live to... About a 100 if they're careful. A mere third of the life of a mermaid."
Ariel looked down. "Oh...."
"But they have one thing that we lack."
"Legs?"
"No... A soul."
Ariel tilted her head. "A... Soul?"
"Yes... Souls are eternal. They move on to the afterlife while we mermaids turn into sea foam and disappear forever."
This troubled the young mermaid. A long life, but she'll disappear forever? Not cool at all.

When her family wasn't looking, Ariel snuck away from the castle. There was one person in the world who could help her.
Knocking on the wall, she waited for an answer. After a while, the sea witch Arete appeared.
"Welcome my child..." She beckoned Ariel into the cave. After making Ariel comfortable, she smiled. "What can I do for you?"
"I want to go on land."
Arete nearly chocked on the food that she was eating. Was this girl mad?
"What makes you want to go on land?" Arete asked carefully.
