Chapter 39- It's hard to believe

I was sitting at my desk in college and sipping coffee at intervals while finishing my work. It was the end of the semester and the work load was making all of us crazy. There were too many submissions and assessments to go through. If felt as if I'm surrounded by books 24x7!

I was tired by the afternoon as I was working past 3 hours, studying and looking up for answers on biochemistry

I kept all the books aside and headed towards the cafeteria, I ordered one cappuccino for me and headed towards a vacant table which was in one dimly lit corner. I just sat there sipping my coffee and glancing outside the window, looking at the other fellow students who were just simply enjoying together with their bunch of friends.

Nostalgia just hit me after looking at them, even we were a bunch of closely knitted friends.  We used to laugh, play stupid pranks on each other, eat together. Everything thing had changed after that shopping incident. We rarely met nowadays. And even if we met it was awkward. I couldn't even look at Ryan. He was behaving very weird. We never spoke, never looked at each other. There was some sort of a cold war between us. I was still angry on him and yet he never cared to apologize.

I hated that! To the core. He knew I was pissed off because of him and yet it seemed that he was really enjoying it. I never knew this would happen between us.

Earlier that week, I was late for a class and was walking down the staircase in a hurry. And to my embarrassment I slipped and a few students were present to watch a show!

I fell on my monkey bone and it started paining. I had difficulty in getting up. One guy and a girl helped me to carry my books and to get up. I saw Ryan standing amidst the crowd who was watching the show.

There was not a single ounce of sympathy and care in his eyes, they were just cold and lifeless. I wondered have we gone that far to stop caring about each other.

*Such a jerk! I hate him!!*

I was just about to get up and leave the cafeteria when Mike saw me. He waved and walked towards my table.

*The day is going to get better!* Rolling my eyes

Mike:"Hey! No classes for you today?"

Me:"Yeah. For an hour I'm free."

*Oh god!! Why did I tell him this! Now I'll have to spend an hour with him! :/*

Mike:"Well that's great! If you don't mind we can stay back here itself for an hour.I'll order something. I'll be back."

I just nodded.

I wonder if Ryan was there. Mike and Ryan always used hang out together. But as far as I remember I hadn't seen Ryan since two day in a row. Didn't know why he is skipping classes.

Mike joined me in a few minutes.

Mike:"So tell me how was your day?" He asked while adjusting his chair

Me:" It was hectic and boring"

Mike:"I'm sure you wont be bored now. Since I'm here"

*Yeah sure!*

I just gave an awkward smile and he did too!

*Arghh!!*

Mike:"So how is your injury? Does the monkey one still pain?"

Me: "Not that  much. I'm a lot better now." I gave him an assuring smile

Mike:"I'm sorry, I wasn't there when you fell. I came to know about it later."

Me: "Why are you apologizing? It's not your fault Mike"

Me: "Well the people who were present didn't help much!" I said rolling my eyes

Mike:"What? Didn't get you!" He was clearly confused

Me: "You know what! Lets not talk about it"

Mike: "I know you wanna talk about it!" He had a wide grin on his face

Me:"Stop teasing! And I'm angry on that jerk!!"

Mike:"Who?"

Me:"Ryan. Your best friend!"

Mike:"And what did he do?"

Me:"He saw me when I fell. Instead of helping me, he was standing in the crowd of spectators! May be enjoying my embarrassing fall. Does  he really hate me that much? I mean what have I done?!"

Mike:"Well, don't blame him. I'm sure he doesn't hate you. His personal life is in a mess right now "

Me:"What happened now?"

Mike:"He recently met his ex-girlfriend!"

*WTF!!*

*Act calm! Act as if you don't give a shit!*

Me: "Well he met Kate. Doesn't look like he is in a mess. He must be on cloud 9!"

Mike:"Well yeah. He did look happy."

Me:"Good for him"

Mike:"Actually I had planned all that. Ryan,Kate and me met the other day. She was constantly in touch with me so I thought we could give it a shot"

*Awesome! Reasons to hate him more!*

Me:"So did that workout?"

Mike:"Kind off. I knew he really liked the whole idea of the meeting. He was smiling from ear to ear when she came."

Me:"Its good that they are sorting out the past issues!"

Mike:"Yeah. It's not like they have patched up but they are on talking terms now. Which is a good sign I guess?" He asked me while cocking an eyebrow

Me:"Totally!" I told him with a totally fake smile

*I've become a pro for faking smiles! *

Mike:"He literally hugged me when we both were about to leave. Can you believe that?"

Me:"Well that's some news! Told you he was literally on cloud 9!"

He just nodded and smiled.

That was a huge blow to me. Some how I felt as if there was a huge hollow inside me. It was a great news because they were sorting out the issues. And I should be happy.

I tried to be happy. But I failed every single time. While walking towards my home that day, these things kept playing in my mind. I couldn't stop them. I knew I was hurt! Somewhere I felt I made a big fool of myself!
