"Mr. Luthor will see you in a moment." the tall woman behind the desk says blandly to me cross the room. I straighten myself up being caught off guard by her loud voice.
"Um, uh, okay." I stutter.
Damn, what's happened to the wit I am so often praised for?
I flip through the red folder on my lap with includes my resume; a man wearing a collared maroon shirt covered black polka-dots strides in and whispers to the tall woman behind the desk. I see her point to me out of the corner of my eye.
"Miss. Gately, Mr. Luthor is prepared to see you." she states glancing at the man with shoulder length, frizzy hair. Quickly, almost clumsy, I stand up and approach the man. He starts to walk off towards a long, bright hallway like room.
Rude much?
Annoyed, I follow him down the plain, white-lighted hall. I press my dark red lips together and wait for him to stay something. Nothing.
You think someone with such a large company would have some people skills.
We turn into a open room, his office I imagine. The room has a soft lighting. Behind a dark oak desk is a painting; a painting of angels fighting demons, it looks like something straight from the bible. Its peculiar, not because of the picture but because its upside down.
"So Miss. Gately you're here to apply for a job at LexCorp? Lovely, just lovely. Why, it seems to get so boring here sometimes. Surely a new employee would help with that fact. Bring a little more to this dull routine." he stammers out quickly. His words are quick and well thought out, a skill I've always admired. A blush overcomes my cheekbones.
"I'm not so sure about that. I can be quite a dull person myself, but, yes. I would like to apply for a job here at LexCorp." I say trying to calm the butterflies in my stomach, well it feels more like Japanese killer hornets. My hands fidget in my lap and my nails slowly claw into my thigh.
"How rude of me. The name is Lex Luthor, current owner of LexCorp." he leans across the desk and firmly puts out his hand.
"Mary Gately. One of the current people applying at LexCorp." I reply (trying to sound humorous) taking his hand in mine and shaking it. I slope back into the chair behind me and straighten out my black dress.
"Ah. Witty, absolutely charming. Now I see on your file you have quite a lot of past experience. Almost no gaps in between." he stays looking down at my resume raising one of his eyebrows in a way that makes him look almost childish.
He's a bit young to be running an multi-billion company, huh?
"Yes, Mr. Luthor. I like being schedule and not being on a task only prevents that." I reply hesitantly, I press my nails into my thigh harder. He looks up at me.
"I suppose, but we will have more time to talk about such subjects." his quick positive, jittery attitude seems to decline. "How soon can you start, Miss. Gately? Tomorrow?"
Questionable. I highly doubt you are serious with little questions of my profession.
"Yes Sir, but I'm assuming you want to ask me more questions." I sigh and tuck my hair behind my ear.
"Correct, but isn't that what tomorrow will be for? I believe it is settled." Mr. Luthor states with one clap and leaves his chair.

Mr. Luthor opens the door to sidewalk. I pause before stepping outside.
"It was splendid meeting you Mary Gately. You are superb." he complements and shakes my hand once more and I exit the building. The air is cold and there is slight wind. I quickly hail a cab, wait for it to pull up, and hop in. I look at the bright building as the cab drives away.
Superb?
My cheeks feel like hot iron.
