"I'm here to see Mr. Luthor." I try to say confidently to the woman with a black bob haircut. She flashes her dark eyes at me and looks somewhat annoyed.
"He's playing basketball." she scoffs and turns her eyes back to the computer. She continues to tap on the keys. "You may have a seat." she rolls her eyes when she sees me still standing in front of her white pearl coloured desk. Feeling foolish I walk towards the row of pale seats.
Basketball? Its absolutely freezing out there. I wouldn't have guessed him to be so sporty...
"Miss. Gately! Ah, Mary. You don't mind me calling you by your first name do you? Its lovely, absolutely lovely, that you have agreed to come back for the day. Definitely splendid that I have decided to employee you, right Mercy?" Lex says striding into the room dressed in a plain light blue t-shirt and jeans. The tall woman behind the desk nods to please him even though you can tell she doesn't care if I live or die.
"It's fine, Mr. Luthor." I answer pleasantly, stand up, and walk towards him while clawing my wrist, its a nervous habit I guess.
"Well let's get started! Would you like me to show you around? Why did I even ask? Stupid me, of course you do!" he starts down a hallway enthusiastic. I follow behind and watch him. "Mary, what a beautiful name. Chosen by mother or father?" he asks breaking the silence I was to nervous to crack myself.
"Chosen by neither." I sigh and flick my eyes up to the ceiling then down to the tile floor wishing he could have asked something less complex.
"Do you care to explain?" he asks once more.
Should have just said my mother.
"Well, my parents chose not to name me until they had known me better." I pause. "We didn't live in the nice part of Metropolis. In fact, we kinda lived in the worst part. My father was shot for his car keys. My mother... we didn't know what happened to her for a very long time. Until, they found her remains in a mud bank several years later." I claw my wrist harder breaking the skin. "I was only a few days old; my aunt adopted me and named me Mary." I stop and watch Mr. Luthor's expression. He appears to have the odd emotional mix of surprise and melancholy.
"Well that is quite a story Mary. Quite a story. My father named me. The arrogant bastard named his child after himself." he starts to loath, then opens a glass door. "Ta da! This is the ever so splendid basketball court." he throws out his arms and spins around to face me.
"Well that makes much more sense. An indoor basketball court." I mutter to myself as I look around. There is then a pounding sound on the floor and the squeak of shoes.
"Do you play, Mary? I certainly do." he shouts while skillfully dribbling a ball around the court. My eyes widen when he makes a three-pointer, I think that's what its called.
"No, I've always been pretty lean despite how much junk I eat. So, I've never felt the need to be very active or sporty." I reply as I sit down on the floor and watch him.
"Well, I would have offered a game, but I suppose we should continue with the tour." Lex says walking towards me. "Would you like some help up, Miss?" he asks chivalrously while offering me his hand.
"Thank you, Mr. Luthor." I blush and take his hand.
