Now I know this is one of the more touchier subjects, so I'm going to try to keep it real, and make it as least offensive as possible.
A lot of times Wattpaders will create a character that really just has a lot of crap going on in her/his life. They typically have terrible parents, abusive relationships, are orphaned, abandoned, etc. Basically they have the worst life imaginable.
It's completely okay to write about someone who is in knee-high horse dung, because it may be all part of whatever your plan is. But many authors on this site tend to make their character's life so completely terrible it becomes cringey. And maybe that's the goal, but a lot of readers don't like cringing at every other word describing the process of how an abusive boyfriend is kicking the hell out of a poor, innocent girl.
It's cool to deliver this level of sadness maybe once or twice during the entire thing for obvious emotional purposes, but otherwise, it's gonna be hard for a lot of people to get through it.
Adding to the cringe experience: Usually writers find that one depressing problem isn't just enough. They put their character through an abusive relationship, make them poor and hungry, sad and lonely, and add so many other problems. All these issues become very hard to keep track of and ends up being too much for the readers to think about.
When you have too many problems, it makes it difficult to figure out what's going on from time to time. Your readers are on Wattpad because they want a break. They wanna chill and most likely don't want their brains working too hard (trying to figure out when and why your character all of a sudden started having Alzheimer's).
AND, when it comes to solving all these problems, it ends up becoming all too easy.
For example: The girl with the abusive relationship finds another lover and all is good again because he makes her smile more than anyone else ever has.
Frick that.
That's not how life works. As quoted by VicEvis, "Love doesn't solve everything!"
Many times a character will have a completely normal life, but they have an obsession with cutting and the concept of death. I especially find these characters annoying because unless you have a reason, there's no need to go through any of the suicidal phases.
Conclusion: Sad is good, but don't make us cringe at every other word.
