A small frisky puppy is running up to you. It's adorable eyes are covered by curly locks of brown hair, it's tongue hanging open. It stops to sniff a dandelion but quickly recovers from the distraction. It's at your feet now, sniffing your shoes and attacking your legs weakly with it's tiny paws. You lift it up and kiss it's head, and it licks your cheek in return.

THEN PICK A DIFFERENT PET.
Almost all of us love animals. They can affect how our stories go greatly, if we know how to use them.
They can add to your character's personality. Maybe the big gang leader is full of crap on the outside, but owns an adorable grey bunny, showing off his soft side.
