In your typical Wattpad story, we have the protagonist (a typically skinny and extremely hot girl) who ends up with the love interest (a hot 'Greek God' bad boy.) But why is it that our main character is never chubby or a little thicker than these typical Wattpad girls? Why is it that the non-skinny girl never gets the guy?
When there is a non-skinny character in a typical Wattpad story, they are usually set as the encouraging friend to the hot main and is basically made to make them look better (so essentially a DUFF, urban dictionary it.) Why can't they get the hot guy? Why does it always have to be the thinner one?
Another thing. Wattpad only really has these 'hot couples' and I would personally love to read a story that has a main character that isn't the most attractive. Now i'm not talking about the Victoria's Secret models that claim to be the most disgusting trash on the face of the earth. I mean genuinely not the most 'beautiful' face-wise. It might teach the other love interest to look deeper than the skin and love the person for who they are at heart. Wouln't that be a great plotline?
Quite realistically, there aren't many 'hot couples' in real life (where both people are so hot, they could burn a the earth to the ground). We shouldn't pick and choose our significant other by their appearance, but by how they act, how they treat us and the others around us. Though you may think that appearance is an important factor, but lots of other things play into what makes a person attractive.
It seems as though this Wattpad character is an outlet or the projection of the writer's desires. They end up being someone everyone loves, someone 'perfect' (flawless skin, flawless hair, banging body, perfect GPA, total athletic etc.)
And it is not okay.
We need to be comfortable in our bodies and to love who we are. We need love ourselves, even if we have thicker thighs, little tummy rolls, even if we are plagued with stretch marks or baby fat. If we don't, we are letting the social standards win; we are letting those standards control us.
If we learn to love ourselves then we won't let these societal standards define who we are and who we look up to. What most people don't realize is that fictional characters actually do influence us, more than most would believe or admit. And if these characters are only ever portrayed by the 'social norm,' how will we ever learn to become ourselves? To accept ourselves for what makes us us?
Embrace yourself for who you are, not for who society wants you to be
