"The procedure will be early tomorrow morning, we'll have you up by 5 and get a good start at 6."

Both Dan and Phil listened closely and hung on to every word Dr. Kjellberg said. Phil went back to the old habit of chewing his nails nervously as he nodded along with Dan.

"Will any other.. Family be stopping in?" Dr. Kjellberg asked, raising an eyebrow at the two boys.

Dan looked down and fiddled with his hands in his lap for a moment before looking back up and replying. "No. They're aware of the situation, they just chose not to come."

Phil bit his lip. I never asked Dan about his family. Sure, the topic has come up, but I never truly asked properly.

Dr. Kjellberg nodded, leaving the room. Both Dan and Phil sat silently, unsure of what to say for the umpteenth time that day.

Dan spoke up. "Do you think I'm gonna make it?"

Phil locked eyes with him, thinking. He took Dan's hand, and gave it a small squeeze. "Of course you are. I'll be by your side the whole time."

Dan smiled, leaning over to kiss Phil. As the seconds passed, the kiss grew more heated, until it got to the point where Phil had climbed on to the hospital bed and straddled Dan, all while kissing him, pausing to breathe every few seconds as well.

Phil kissed Dan and the world fell away. It was slow and soft, comforting in ways that words would never be. Phil's hand rested below Dan's ear, his thumb caressing Dan's cheek as their breaths mingled. Dan ran his fingers down Phil's spine, pulling him closer until there was no space left in between them and he could feel Phil's heart beating against his chest.

Phil pulled away, moving down to Dan's neck and planting light butterfly kisses up and down it. Dan closed his eyes, and found himself tugging at Phil's hair as he kissed the tender spots.

"I love you."

Phil stopped kissing Dan's neck and looked up, blue immediately meeting brown. He leaned in, lightly kissing his forehead before replying.

"I love you more."
