It was a gradual process with me, so I think the shift was a little easier. Even though A World Without You is technically a contemporary novel, it is still very weird and has sci fi elements (time travel! super powers!), so genre-wise, it was an easy shift.
That said, the contemporary was much harder to write! With Across the Universe or The Body Electric, if I got stuck, I could just blow something up or invent some tech or something...but in A World Without You, I was definitely constrained by what's real and not (even when I playing around with what's real and not...).
